| Community, Diversity, and Economic
Development: A Two-Day Seminar
CSCS faculty are working
with students in a number of classes to create original research and video
projects related to our community. Presentations of these projects are
slated for December 6 and 7, and are open to the university community and
general public.
In Dr. Divya McMillin’s class on "Communication
and National Development," students have been making connections between
development issues in Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American countries
and similar issues in Tacoma. Group video projects, designed to create
awareness of micro world systems within the local community, have led students
to explore the efforts of various local grassroots organizations committed
to community development. These projects have resulted in 5-7 minute video
documentaries which include such topics as: the Puyallup river project,
the Hilltop Artists in Residence Program, the Citizens for a Healthy Bay
efforts, the Safe Streets Initiative, The Martin Luther King Housing Development
Association, and Micro Parks in Tacoma.
Students in Mike Honey's class on "Labor, Race,
Gender and Poverty in Pierce County," will make ten-minute presentations
on the status of workers in the labor market, prison labor, welfare to
work, the status of various unions, contingent temporary workers, teacher
unions, the Southeast Asian community, the Kaiser Aluminum strike, and
other issues.
Schedule:
Monday, Dec. 6, 5:30-7:00 p.m. – BHS 106:
paper presentations on labor, race, gender, and poverty.
Tuesday, Dec 7, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. – BHS 104:
video presentations on communication and development.
Coffee and cookies will be served, sponsored by
the Student Labor Organization.
