Test Requirements

Please check back in September for detailed information about test requirements for the 08/09 WSYS. Test requirement information for the 07/08 WSYS is listed below for reference.

Test Requirements for 5th and 6th Grade Students

    • A student in 5th or 6th grade must achieve a total score in the 97th, 98th or 99th percentile (%) on a standardized grade-level test in the reading or mathematics sections. Students need to qualify in only one section. The test must use percentile ranks that compare students to a national US population.
    • The test date must be from September 1, 2005 or later.
    • No additional testing is required for 5th and 6th grade students.
    • Students must submit a new test to be recognized in consecutive WSYS talent searches. A student will not be recognized multiple times for the same test score.
    • Applicants must provide the Robinson Center with photocopies of test results or written verification by a school official.

We will only accept scores from the list of tests below. Please only send scores from one of these tests - we do not need scores from multiple tests to qualify for WSYS. These are the minimum scores that we will accept:

    • WASL (4th grade) - Reading 440 or Math 458
    • WASL (5th grade) - Reading 448 or Math 476
    • Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) - Verbal 97% or Quantitative 97%
    • Educational Records Bureau (ERB) - Verbal Reasoning 97%, Reading Comprehension 97%, or Quantitative Reasoning 97%
    • Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) - Reading Total 97% or Mathematics Total 97%
    • School and College Ability Test (SCAT) (5th grade) - Verbal 455 or Quantitative 470
    • School and College Ability Test (SCAT) (6th grade) - Verbal 465 or Quantitative 480
    • Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) - Total Reading 97% or Total Math 97%

Test Requirements for 7th and 8th Grade Students

    • A student in 7th or 8th grade must take a college entrance exam to qualify for WSYS. Students may take either the ACT (American College Test) or SAT (previously known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test) to qualify for WSYS. ACT or SAT paper applications are typically available at high school counselor offices, or parents can register for a student online. Note: Students under 13 must submit a paper application for the SAT. For the ACT, http://www.actstudent.org For the SAT, http://www.sat.org. The ACT (without the Writing portion) is $30, and the SAT is $43.
    • It is free to join WSYS, but unfortunately, we do not have financial aid available to apply toward testing fees. Please go to the ACT and SAT web sites for information about fee waivers for these tests.
    • The UW Testing Center also offers special ACT exam sessions for an additional fee: call 206-543-1170 for more information.
    • Students must submit a new test to be recognized in consecutive WSYS talent searches. A student will not be recognized multiple times for the same test score.
    • Applicants must provide the Robinson Center with photocopies of test results.

Note: It takes several weeks to receive test scores from ACT and SAT once the test has been taken. Since scores must be received by our office by February 1, 2008, the last date to take the SAT is Dec 1 (late registration ends Nov 8) and the last date to take the ACT is Dec 8 (late registration ends Nov 15). The only other option is to contact the UW Testing Center to schedule an appointment to take the Institutional ACT. 206-543-1170
