From the Director
Welcome to 2017! This Winter, CSSCR will have short course series. The first series is focused on introductory skills in statistical languages for students taking courses using these languages. They will be held during the first two weeks of the quarter. These short courses are described in this newsletter and are now open to registration.
A second series of courses will be scheduled for mid-quarter, and will include both introductory and more specialized topics. These will be described in the next newsletter.

This class will teach you how to get started with R using the
free integrated development environment called Rstudio. The course will cover the basic
organization of R and Rstudio, where to find good help
references, and how to begin a basic analysis. This class is

Introduction to R Base Graphics
Description:
This class will introduce students to ways of producing effective graphs in R. Topics covered will include basic plotting functions (histograms, scatter plots, etc.), production of multi-panel graphs, and various means for exporting graphs for use outside of R.

R Graphics Using ggplot2
Description:
This class is an introduction to the popular graphics package ggplot2. We will discuss the structure of the ggplot2,
including the basic elements of the underlying grammar and how plots can be built-up in a layered fashion. We will
then use ggplot2 to produce number of different plots, such as line graphs, histograms, and boxplots. Attendees will
be assumed to have basic familiarity with R.

Introduction to SAS
Description:
This introductory class will cover basic features and some data cleaning and recoding of variables in SAS. The topics include: an overview of the SAS system; how to read/enter data, modify, explore and manage data; and some basic data recoding and variable creation.

The Center for Social Science Computation and Research (CSSCR)
is an interdepartmental computer center in the College of Arts and
Sciences at the University of Washington. CSSCR provides facilities and
consulting support for computing activity related to teaching and
research at the University.
