CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS

Activities of the Communicable Disease Control, Epidemiology and Immunization Section include surveillance for notifiable conditions (with the exception of STDs and TB which are separate programs at Public Health), disease control and outbreak response, and bioterrorism and biological disaster (i.e., pandemic influenza) preparedness and response. Opportunities for research include evaluation and/or development of existing or new surveillance systems, analyses of existing communicable disease surveillance databases, evaluation of public health prevention and intervention programs, and needs assessments on a variety of communicable disease topics. Current projects include epidemiology of pertussis transmission in infants, molecular epidemiology of pertussis transmission, risk factors for E. coli 0157:H7 disease, evaluation of public health prevention programs for hepatitis C virus, and a variety of studies related to seroepidemiology and behavioral risk factors for blood borne virus infections (primarily HIV and HCV). Projects are also available in the area of foodborne enteric diseases, and prevention of listeriosis and reptile-associated salmonellosis. Opportunities exist for training in disease/outbreak investigation.
