Our mother-to-child transmission studies explore correlates of immunity in the infant, with a focus on examining basic science questions from an epidemiologic perspective. We have been measuring several innate, cellular, and genetic factors in two large cohorts of mother-infant pairs. These include HIV-1 specific CTL and T helper responses, HLA type, HIV-1 co-receptor mutations, and chemokines in breastmilk and genital secretions. All of our studies take place in Nairobi, Kenya where I travel approximately 3 times per year to work closely with my Kenyan colleagues and University of Washington investigators, post-doctoral fellows, and students who are based in Kenya.
