CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS

As director of the STD Control Program for Public Health - Seattle & King County, Dr. Handsfield's research emphasizes clinical and epidemiologic aspects of STDs, especially in relation to strategies for prevention and control. Current research projects include studies of novel approaches to STD partner management (e.g., expedited therapy without clinical examination and peer-referral strategies), studies of rescreening as a chlamydia control strategy, and epidemiology and prevention of resurgent STDs, HIV infection, and behavioral risks among men who have sex with men. Other research projects include studies of special outreach efforts to diagnose and treat STDs in populations outside STD clinics, public health aspects of genital herpes and its prevention, and industry-supported studies of new diagnostic tests and treatments for common STDs.
