Dr. Lingappa’s research focuses using clinical research studies to better understand host defense factors in infectious diseases. Currently he is medical director and co-investigator of a large multisite clinical trial in Africa evaluating suppression of genital herpes (HSV-2) to reduce HIV transmission; and co-investigator on a second large multisite clinical trial of pre-exposure antiretroviral prophylaxis to reduce HIV transmission. Epidemiologic data and clinical specimens from these and other clinical studies are stored in the UW Department of Global Health International Clinical Research Center (ICRC). Collaborating with specialty immunology and genomics labs at the UW and elsewhere, Dr. Lingappa uses these specimens and data to conduct translational scientific investigations into the role of host genomic and immunologic factors and viral co-infections on HIV and other infections.
