CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS Dr. Wald's research focuses on epidemiology and clinical epidemiology of HSV infections and the development of antiviral therapies and prophylactic and immunotherapeutic vaccines. Current research projects at the Virology Research Clinic include (1) the frequency and determinants of subclinical shedding of HSV in the genital tract, (2) risk factors for HSV-2 transmission and acquisition, (3) the role of antiviral therapy in interrupting HSV transmission, (4) pathogenesis of acyclovir-resistant HSV in immuno-compromised hosts, and (5) interventions for HSV in pregnancy. Several ongoing studies are exploring the clinical interactions between HSV and HIV in dually infected persons. A new area of interest is the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of HHV-8 infection, including risks for progression to Kaposi's sarcoma. Dr. Wald collaborates closely with Dr. Corey's molecular virology laboratory and Dr. Koelle's and Dr. Posavad's immunology laboratory. PUBLICATIONS |
