C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S :  to Lara Strick, MD, DTHM, who joins our faculty as an Acting Instructor, effective December 1st.  
    Lara received her MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and completed her residency and fellowship here, where
    she also received a Master’s in Epidemiology.  She will work 40% in the Madison Clinic where she will care for a large panel of HIV
    infected patients and mentor medical students, residents and infectious diseases fellows who work in the clinic.  She will also take an
    active role in the clinic’s teaching activities including the HIV journal club, the medical housestaff HIV lecture series, and teaching of
    fellows, residents and students including those enrolled in the fourth year HIV medicine elective.  She will also work 50% time for the
    Department of Corrections, State of Washington, where she will direct the care of all known HIV infected inmates, assist in the care of
    hepatitis C infected inmates, provide educational inservices on HIV, HCV, STDs and a variety of other infectious diseases and help
    update or develop DOC guidelines for the management of infectious diseases.  Lara also plans to develop a program that introduces
    UW medical students to prison medicine and will assist the DOC in the medical investigation of any deaths that occur within the DOC
    system. 

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S :  to Amy E. Bryant, who recently became an Affiliate Assistant Professor in our Division.  Amy
    received her Doctor of Philosopy degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Idaho in 1999. 
    She has held various increasing roles in research since 1986, and currently is a Research Scientist at the VA Medical Center in Boise,
    Idaho.  As an affiliate member of our faculty, she will maintain a collaborative role by participating in NIH grants submitted through the
    UW and in research activities with UW faculty, andserve in a teaching role educating our residents and medical students rotating at the
    Boise VAMC. 

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S :  to Chris Behrens and his wife Valentine who had a baby girl, Seviana Isabella, born September 8th.

2 0 0 6    W I L L I A M    M M    K I R B Y    L E C T U R E R :  This year’s Kirby Lecturer will be Robert A. Weinstein, M.D.,
    Chairman, Division of Infectious Diseases, Stroger Hospital  and Chief, Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center for the Prevention, Care and
    Research of Infectious Diseases, and Professor of Medicine, Rush University Medical College.   He will visit Seattle December 6-7, with
    dinner being December 6th, and his lecture at Grand Rounds December 7th.  Dr. Weinstein is an internationally recognized expert in the
    areas of antimicrobial resistance and hospital acquired infections.  The title of his Grand Rounds will be, “Community-acquired
    Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus:  Beware When Old Dogs Learn New Tricks,” and the dinner talk will be about infection
    control issues, with the title, “The Uses of Controversy.”

H U M A N    S U B J E C T S :  The Human Subjects Division typically requests that PIs respond to written inquiries within ten days. 
    If you do not respond within the stated timeframe, you will be considered noncompliant.  At that point, the occurrence is referred to full
    committee who has the power to immediately suspend your study.  This has not been a problem in Medicine, but PIs should be aware of it.
