O R C A    C L A S S E S :  Harborview is moving in the direction of having all clinical notes entered into ORCA, the electronic medical
record.  PCIS now provides classes that will help make this much easier.  The classes are short, about 45 minutes, and emphasize
setting defaults that will facilitate finding patient’s charts and entering notes.  Even if you have already received ORCA training, these
short sessions will be very helpful.  For more information, please email hmcreg@u.washington.edu.  All classes will be held in
        HMC R&T Room 115:
                Feb 2:  7:00-8:00

            Essential STD Exam Skills

N P I :    HIPAA requires the adoption of a standard unique identifier for health care providers.  The NPI will replace health care
provider identifiers in use in HIPAA standard transactions (including Medicare legacy IDS, UPIN, OSCAR, PIN, and National
Supplier Clearinghouse or NSC).  The provider’s NIP will not change and will remain with the provider regardless of job or location
changes.  The NPI will NOT replace the MedStaff ID#.  This number is internal to the UW and is the physician ID number.  The
NPI will be used for purposes of billing and claims.  Although residents and fellows do not bill (and do not have UPINs), the UW
decided that NPIs would be required for all UW residents and fellows since they can be listed as a referring provider on a claim.
It is important that residents and fellows have their numbers since these will remain with them for the duration of their practice as
physicians but programs will not need to use this information during the course of their training.
