N E W    A P P O I N T M E N T S:  Corey Casper became an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in Allergy and Infectious Diseases and
    the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, December 1st,.  Corey received his MD from Cornell University and his Masters of Public Health
    from the University of Washington.  He completed his ID fellowship here and has focused on the transmission of HHV-8, and he recently started a
    Castleman’s Disease Clinic in Seattle and receives international referrals.  He also has taken on the responsibility of the Infection Control Committee
    at the SCCA.  He currently has a K23 award entitled, “HHV-8 Transmission Among Men Who Have Sex with Men. 

A W A R D S :   Congratulations to Tom Hawn for receiving a consortium grant from The Dana Foundation.  The three year project, entitled, “The
    Influence of Genetic Variation in Toll-like Receptors on Susceptibility to Tuberculosis and the Immune Response to BCG Vaccination,” includes
    collaborators in Vietnam and South Africa.  The grant provides $66,666 per year for three years. 

C H A N G E S :  On March 1, Conrad Liles will leave the University of Washington to assume the position of Professor of Medicine and Director of
    the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Tornoto and the University Health Network.  At the University of Toronto, he will hold a
    Canada Research Chair in Infectious Diseases and Inflammation and be a member of both the Toronto General Research Institute and the
    McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Molecular Medicine.  He will continue to be actively involved in the ongoing SCCOR in Acute Lung Injury at the
    University of Washington and will reamin an Affiliate Professor of Medicine in our division.  We are sad to see Conrad leave but wish him the best
    in his new position. 

C O N G R A T  U  L A T I O N S  TO Corey Casper for receiving a Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award from the Doris Duke
    Charitable Foundation.  The title of his project is, “HHV-8 Replication and Progression to Malignancy in Africa”  Corey is among eleven people
    selected to receive this year’s award, which includes research support of $125,000 per year for three years. 

A U D I O    C O N F E R E N C E :  Dr. Anna-Barbara Moscicki will present an audio conference January 18 from noon until 1:30pm, on
    Adolescents and HPV:  Best Practices.  Dr. Moscicki is a Professor of Adolescent Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco and her
    research involves long-term track of certain HPV strains found in adolescent females.  Registration and materials are available on the Center for
    Health Training website:  http://centerforhealthtraining.org. 

P A N D E M I C    F L U    C O N F E R E N C E :  Harborview Medical Center and King County Seattle Public Health are sponsoring a
    conference on Pandemic Influenza on January 30th, 8:00am-2:00pm at HMC.  Presenters will include CDC experts Dr. David Shay, Influenza
    Branch, and Dr. Arjun Srinivassan, Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, aka Hospital Infections Branch, discussing an update on antiviral
    drugs and strategies for use in pandemic influenza, and infection control in healthcare settings for viral respiratory infections including pandemic
    influenza.  Other topics to be covered include clinical management, psychological impacts and patient care during a catastrophic event, and
    protecting workforce and family.

M A N D A T O R Y       U W P     C O M P L I A N C E      T R A I N I N G :    This training is a requirement as part of our Corporate Integrity
    Agreement (CIA).  Clinical faculty members must complete one hour of General Training plus at least three hours of Specific Training annually.  The
    one-hour general education regarding the CIA and related UWP policies training will be available online in the near future.  The three-hour
    specialty-specific education regarding documentation and coding training will be provided as live sessions:

        UWMC:  Jan 11:  9:00am-noon
                        Feb 2:  9:00am-noon
