C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to Thomas Hawn, who received the 2006 Dade Behring MicroScan Young Investigator Award
from the American Society for Microbiology at its recent general meeting. This award honors outstanding clinical research and potential
in a promising young scientist in clinical microbiology, clinical immunology, or infectious diseases. Dr. Hawn was recognized for his work
on genetic determinants of susceptibility to infection, in particular Legionnaire's disease and tuberculosis.

A N N U A L P I C N I C : The Annual Coliform Cookout to meet new fellows and their families will be held July 5th, 4:30pm, at
Magnuson Park, Shelter One, south of the boat launch. Thanks to Tim Dellit for organizing this important event.
S T D / H I V P R I N C I P L E S C O U R S E : The 14th annual Principles of STD/HIV Research Course will be held July 17-27th.
There are 120 participants registered for the course, including 49 participants from 25 foreign countries. The course directors are
Dr.s Lisa Manhart and Scott McClelland. The course was first held in 1993 with the aim of offering an intensive overview of the skills
needed to pursue a research career in the field of STD. The course offers introductory training in behavioral, clinical, epidemiologic,
statistical and pathogenesis research by providing a practically oriented overview of the language and skills common to these broad
disciplines. Faculty for the course are drawn from well-established UW investigators as well as outside experts. Please see
