A N N U A L I D P I C N I C : The annual ID picnic will be held at Magnuson Park, Sand Point Way NE
and 65th, at shelter #1. Festivities will begin at 5:00pm. The ID division will provide drinks, hot dogs, sausages,
hamburgers, veggie burgers and chips. If your last name begins with A-M, please bring desert; N-Z please bring
salads. See you there!
C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to David Koelle who recently received a $75,000 malaria award from Puget
Sound Partners for Global Health for the pilot projected entitled, “Identification of Novel Plasmodium falciparum
liver-stage CD8 T-cell antigens for vaccines.” Congratulations to Wesley Van Voorhis, Matt Golden, and Carey
Farquhar, who each received Royalty Research funds. Wes’ project is entitled, “Trypanosoma brucei Tbrukin1:
Role of a possible farnesylated kinesin in cellular function.” Matt’s project is entitled, “A preliminary cohort study
of sexually inexperienced men who have sex with men.” And Carey’s project is entitled, “ HSV-2 suppression
among HIV-1 infected pregnant women to reduce plasma and genital HIV-1 levels and vertical transmission
HIV-1.” A total of 143 proposals were submitted to the Office of Reseach requesting support this year. Of
these, only 32 were funded. Competition was thus intense and we congratulate Wes, Matt and Carey!C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to four of our fellows who recently were recommended for the National
Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program and are expected to receive them. They are Chad Achenbach,
