F E L L O W    R E C R U I T M E N T :  New fellow applicants will be visiting soon!  Please be available and flexible as possible when
Darlene calls to schedule appointments with prospective applicants.  The next visit dates are March 5, 7, and April 11.  Wes asks
everyone to save March 23rd as a date where additional applicants might be visiting.

N I H :  The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released the results and observations of its Targeted Site Review program, an initiative
to ensure that grant recipient institutions comply with federal regulations on financial conflicts of interest in research. The NIH conducted
eighteen targeted site reviews in fiscal year 2006, represent-ing approximately $4 billion in grants (or 25% of the NIH budget allocated
for research grants that year). The NIH then developed an observation document for use by the wider grantee community as a resource
for evaluating and improving implementation of the regulations. According to the report, the agency "found no instances of intentional
noncompliance.” The two most common compliance issues identified by the NIH were the appropriate definition of "investigator," with
respect to coverage by the regulation, and lapses in meeting institutional reporting requirements to the agency. For more information see:
             http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/coi/index.htm

G R A N T S . G O V :  Some important reminders to keep in mind are:

        Grants.gov Submissions:

1.  Use the “Add New Attachment” button for new files.
            2.  Use the “Update” button to replace one file with another version.

        Non-Grants.gov Applications:
            1.  Do NOT attach your sponsor documents to the eGC1.
            2.  Provide paper copies of your application to campus reviewers and OSP.
            3.  Failure to provide paper copies to Animals will result in NO REVIEW.

         SF424 Forms:
            1.  The Dean’s reviewer will not review the grants.gov application forms unless all required forms are completed and moved to the
                    right side (completed area).
            2.  Completed forms should have all mandatory information included.
            3.  All the business pieces (budgets, budget justification, resources, equipment, checklist) should be final and complete before
routing the eGC1 ten working days before due date.
            4.  Attach internal budget spreadsheet to the eGC1 in the category, “school documents,” to assist UW reviewers.
            5.  Make sure the eGC1, SF424 and spreadsheet budget figures agree.
            6.  The School of Medicine site inventory and scientific classification forms (new and competing renewals) should be attached to the
                    SF424 as, “school documents.”
            7.  The Acting Letters for Acting Faculty and other requests letters (emeritus or clinical) that come from the Division Head to
the Chair, should be attached to the eGC1 as a PDF file (school documents).  If you feel uncomfortable attaching these
letters, send them to Harriet Ortiz, Box 356520, or fax to 685-9425.
            8.  On the site location page, OSP will ALWAYS be the primary position and the site of work will be Location #1.
Other sites will be in #2, and so forth.
            9.  The eGC1 number should be in the SF424 (R&R) form, Box #2, right box (Application Identifier).
          10.  On the 2nd page of the SF424 (R&R) form, Box 16, lines 16a and 16b are the same dollar amount unless cost sharing
is involved, and should match the eGC1 total cost of project (Directs + Indirects).

S A G E    H E L P  D E S K :  The SAGE Help Desk will be open from 9:00am until 4:00pm Monday through Friday via telephone
685-8335 or email sagehelp@u.washington.edu.  Queries will be returned 30-120 minutes after receipt.  Please contact them with
questions regarding the eGC1, File Upload, or eApprovals.

O R C A    C L A S S E S :  Harborview is moving in the direction of having all clinical notes entered into ORCA, the electronic medical
record.  PCIS now provides classes that will help make this much easier.  The classes are short, about 45 minutes, and emphasize
setting defaults that will facilitate finding patient’s charts and entering notes.  Even if you have already received ORCA training, these
short sessions will be very helpful.  For more information, please email hmcreg@u.washington.edu.  All classes will be held in
        HMC R&T Room 115:
                Mar 1:  7:00-8:00
