C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S   to Connie Celum, who has been elected to the Department of Medicine Professor’s Review Committee, the group
that reviews proposed promotions to Professor each year.

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S     O N     N E W     A W A R D S : to David Koelle who recently received a Royalty Research award, entitled
“Control of T-cell Homing to Skin”; to Catherine Blish, who has been awarded a 5 year KO8 award, entitled, “Defining Immune Deficits in HIV-1
Infected Women”; and to Susan Graham for receiving a 5 year K23 award entitled, “Genital HIV-1 Shedding among Women Starting Second-Line
    Antiretroviral Therapy.”

F O R E I G N    F I N A N C I A L    A C C O U N T S :  US citizens, residents, or persons doing business in the US, who maintain an account with
a foreign financial entity must keep records and file reports regarding that account with the Treasury Department.  This includes UW employees working
in foreign countries.  The information must be submitted on Form TDF 90-22.1 annually, on or before June 30th, of the succeeding year.  For more
    information, see http://www.washington.edu/admin/sp/office/foreignaccounts.htm

G R A N T S . g o v :  NIH has moved the timeline for initiating all electronic NIH RO1 proposal submissions to February 1, 2007.  Updates on the status
of the transition to electronic submission and the new forms are posted on the NIH eRA Electronic Submission of Grant Applications Website.  To prepare
for the implementation of Grants.gov electronic submission of NIH grant proposals, training is offered by OSP the following days:
                Monday May 8, 2006, 11:00 to noon
Monday June 12, 2006 from 11 to noon
All sessions will be in the OSP Conference Room.  There is no charge for the training but space is limited to 30 participants per session in the hands-on
sessions at OSP.  Make your reservations to  osprsvp@u.washington.edu to reserve your space.  Please see OSP’s home page for updates.

S O M    P O L I C I E S    R E    G R A N T S . g o v:  The new electronic submission processes will force significant changes to grant submissions at
all levels.  The School of Medicine’s policies regarding submission timelines are:

  1. Faculty will be required to use Grants.gov for new, competing and resubmitted proposals.
  1. All federal grant mechanisms are projected to migrate to Grants.gov by October 2007:
    1. NIH RO3, R21 and R33 grants will submit through Grants.gov by June 1, 2006;
    2. NIH RO1 grants will submit through Grants.gov by February 1, 2007
  1. To assure successful submission, draft [of the scientific portion] applications must be submitted to OSP ten days before the agency deadline.  {The
remainder of the application must be in its final version.]
  2. SOM requires that your FINAL application, including science, be at OSP five working days before the agency deadline.  [The Division asks that the
final be at OSP at least 14 working days before the mailing deadline.]
  3. After successful submission to eRA Commons, there will be a window of opportunity (2 working days) to check the assembled application online.
PIs will need to work through OSP to address any corrections.  This is NOT an opportunity to edit or supplement the application.  Any changes to
content will reinitiate the full cycle of processing and review, and may result in a late application.
  4. All faculty submitting grants must first be added to the eRA Commons  (contact Myrna if you to be registered).
  5. The PI’s name must be entered into the Grants.gov form EXACTLY as it appears in the eRA Commons.
  6. The correct software must be loaded on computers.  For PC users, the software is PureEdge.  For Mac users, the Citrix server must be used as an
    interface with PureEdge software.
  7. Faculty with appointments at Children’s or FHCRC will need separate logins within the eRA Commons for submission of applications through those
    institutions.
  8. Only OSP can submit applications.
  9. There is no electronic interface between UW’s SAGE system and Grants.gov at this time.  You must continue to use SAGE for internal routing of the
    eGC1.
  10. Grant application forms have changed and each grant will require its own grant-specific form packet, downloadable from Grants.gov.
  11. NIH Submissions require a combination of Grants.gov standard forms (SF424) and additional forms previously considered part of the PHS398 form
set.  It is important to follow the opportunity-specific instructions and links to assure the correct forms are completed.
  12. The SF424 form highlights mandatory fields in yellow.  NIH submissions specify ADDITIONAL mandatory fields that must be completed (but they
are not highlighted).  Read the opportunity-specific instructions.

for Professional Staff.  This year we are asking for updated job descriptions to be submitted along with the performance evaluations.  Supervisors should
meet with their staff and discuss job performance based the individual’s job description.  If the duties and responsibilities have changed significantly,
