C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S : to Judith Wasserheit on being elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National
Academies. Dr. Wasserheit directs the HIV Vaccine Trials Network at FHCRC. She was recently named Vice Chair of the new UW
Department of Global Health. She has been Head of the STD Branch at NIH and CDC and an advisor to the World Health
Organization, the World Bank, UNAIDS, and the Population Council on HIV/AIDS and STD prevention. The IOM is a body of
about 1,500 members who provide science-based advice on matters of biomedical science, medicine, and health to policy-makers,
professionals, and the general public. Members are elected on the basis of their professional achievement and concern with issues
affecting public health.CO N G R A T U L A T I O N S : to Merle A. Sande, who received the Alexander Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievement at the
recent IDSA meeting in Toronto. This is IDSA’s highest award. Dr. Sande was recognized as a peerless investigator, educator, mentor,
clinician and role model whose 40 year career has influenced nearly every aspect of infectious diseases. Among Dr. Sande’s major
contributions is his basic research on the pathophysiology of bacterial meningitis. As a pioneer and thought leader during the early days
of the HIV epidemic in San Francisco, Dr. Sande set standards by which AIDS patients are still managed today. He recently launched
and now oversees the Academic Alliance Foundation which is focused on AIDS care and prevention in Africa. He has written and
edited literally hundreds of publications, including the Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy.CO N G R A T U L A T I O N S : To Nina Kim, Karen Mark, Lynn Connolly and Chris Czaja on receiving travel grants to IDSA; and to

HIV-1 Transmission in the Genital Mucosa of Women.P A N D E M I C F L U F O R U M : On Nov 4th, from 9:00am-3:00pm Seattle King County Public Health and the Centers for
Disease Control will host a public form on pandemic flu at Northgate Community Center. 10510 Fifth Avenue NE (across from Macy’s
at Northgate Mall). Registration is limited to approximately 100 participants. Participation is limited to people who do not work in
public health or emergency preparedness. The forum is seeking input from the general public on how proposed community measures
such as canceling schools and prohibiting large public gatherings would impact them. They are NOT seeking experts or professionals
in any particular area, but are looking for a diverse cross section of the community with respect to SES, occupation, ethnicity. To

Chairman, Division of Infectious Diseases, Stroger Hospital and Chief, Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center for the Prevention, Care and
Research of Infectious Diseases, and Professor of Medicine, Rush University Medical College. He will visit Seattle December 6-7,
with dinner being December 6th, and his lecture at Grand Rounds December 7th. Dr. Weinstein is an internationally recognized expert
in the areas of antimicrobial resistance and hospital acquired infections. The title of his Grand Rounds will be, “Community-acquired
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: Beware When Old Dogs Learn New Tricks,” and the dinner talk will be about infection
control issues, with the title, “The Uses of Controversy.”2 0 0 6 A I D S & S T D R E S E A R C H S Y M P O S I U M: The Center for AIDS and STD is sponsoring a one-day
research symposium on Wednesday, November 29th, featuring presentations by recent recipients of Center for AIDS Research and
STI-Cooperative Research Center Developmental Awards, pre-and post-doctoral fellows of the STD training grant, and a panel
discussion with local distinguished faculty members on the topic, “Implementation of an HPV Vaccine: Challenges and Implications.”
