C H A N G E S : With Walter Stamm’s decision to step aside as Division Head, after 13 distinguished
years, Wesley Van Voorhis becomes Acting Head as of Nov 1st. We are fortunate to have Wes
accept this position and look forward to his leadership in the future vision of the Division. Wes would
like to hear from each of you about priorities and issues for the Division.C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to Karen Mark for winning the Program Committee Choice Award (1 of 4)
at the IDSA Annual Meeting in San Diego last month, for her presentation, “Half-life of HSV-2 Mucosal
Replication after Acyclovir Treatment.” IDSA Travel Grants were awarded to William Berrington, Warren
Dinges, Wendy Gill, Ann Misch and Steven Pergam for their superior abstracts which they presented at
the IDSA meeting. In addition, Special Citations for Fellows in Training for the caliber of their abstracts
were won by Drs. Berrington, Gill and Misch. Chad Achenbach was also provided a travel award to
present his case for ID Images at the Fellows Course at IDSA. Only 5 cases were selected from over
120 submissions.C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to Jairam Lingappa, for serving as Associate Director of the new International

Auditorium, Dr. Martina Morris, Professor of Sociology and Statistics, will present a talk entitled, “Disparities in
HIV and STI: Explanations with Global Reach and Local Relevance. A panel discussion will be led by Grace
John Stewart on the topic, “Prevention of Neonatal Infections: Progress and Challenges,” with presentations
by recent recipients of the Center for AIDS Research and STI-Cooperative Research Center Development
Awards, and pre- and post-doctoral fellows of the STD Training Grant. Registration for the all day event is

consent materials that are stamped with the IRB approval date for recruiting and/or consenting subjects.
If your recruitment and/or consent materials were approved on or before 10/31/07, you are not required
to use an IRB-approved stamp copy when recruiting or consenting subjects. IRB-approved stamped
consent forms should also be submitted with the Status Report Form at the time of continuing review.
New and revised forms include three new supplemental forms for use with the revised Modification Form.

grants will be treated under the current continuing resolution (CR). Congress has yet to clear any of the fiscal
year 2008 appropriation bills and agencies have been working under a continuing resolution since the start of
the fiscal year on Oct 1st. The current CR is set to expire on Nov 16th. As it did in FY 2006 and 2007, NIH
announced it will fund most non-competing awards at 80% of previously committed levels while it operates under
the CR. When NIH receives its appropriation for FY 2008, these awards will be adjusted. In FY 2007, once the
final appropriations bill was enacted, NIH funded non-competing awards at an average of 97.1% of the previous

1. Upload grant/contract applications under the “Documents to be Submitted to Sponsor” section.
2. .Attach a single PDF Document with the pages in the order it will be submitted to the sponsor. If signatures are required, please provide a separate file containing only the pages requiring signature.
3. Upload budget spreadsheet, Department of Medicine forms (checklist and site) under “Internal Documents for Dept/School/College.
4. If you are not submitting an electronic copy to the sponsor, attach a single file of your proposal under “Internal Documents for Dept/School/College.

V I O L E N C E P R E V E N T I O N : The UW Advisory Committee on Violence Prevention is sponsoring
sessions this quarter. Open to all students, faculty and staff, these 50 minute sessions focus on recognizing
and warning signs of violence, how to respond, and campus resources and poicies. For more information

permits with the Seattle Fire Department, effective Oct 1st for Health Sciences This means that HS Academic
Services and Facilities will pay the master permit fee, and will then bill individual units. If you have a new permit
under review, send it to Stephanie Steppe, Box 357175. Copies of hazardous permits will be provided to
individual units. If you’ve already paid, your renewal fees for 2007-2008 will be prorated. It is important to keep
MyChem updated as this information is used to determine the annual fee and is one of the conditions for the
special permit. EH&S and SFD will conduct audits of MyChem and laboratories to verify accuracy of inventories.
Read all materials provided with your new permit and keep the permit and materials in each laboratory safety
