N I H    N O N – C O M P E T I N G    G R A N T S :  NIH recently published a notice detailing how non-competing
grants will be treated under the current continuing resolution (CR).  Congress has yet to clear any of the fiscal
year 2008 appropriation bills and agencies have been working under a continuing resolution since the start of
the fiscal year on Oct 1st.  The current CR is set to expire on Nov 16th.  As it did in FY 2006 and 2007, NIH
announced it will fund most non-competing awards at 80% of previously committed levels while it operates under
the CR.  When NIH receives its appropriation for FY 2008, these awards will be adjusted.  In FY 2007, once the
final appropriations bill was enacted, NIH funded non-competing awards at an average of 97.1% of the previous
committed levels.  The text of the NIH announcement is available at:
            http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-001.html

2.      .Attach a single PDF Document with the pages in the order it will be submitted to the sponsor.  If signatures are required, please provide a separate file containing only the pages requiring signature.

3.      Upload budget spreadsheet, Department of Medicine forms (checklist and site) under “Internal Documents for Dept/School/College.

4.      If you are not submitting an electronic copy to the sponsor, attach a single file of your proposal under “Internal Documents for Dept/School/College.

H A Z A R D O U S      M A T E R I A L S      P E R M I T S:  Health Sciences has negotiated new consolidated
permits with the Seattle Fire Department, effective Oct 1st for Health Sciences  This means that HS Academic
Services and Facilities will pay the master permit fee, and will then bill individual units.  If you have a new permit
under review, send it to Stephanie Steppe, Box 357175.  Copies of hazardous permits will be provided to
individual units.  If you’ve already paid, your renewal fees for 2007-2008 will be prorated.  It is important to keep
MyChem updated as this information is used to determine the annual fee and is one of the conditions for the
special permit.  EH&S and SFD will conduct audits of MyChem and laboratories to verify accuracy of inventories.
Read all materials provided with your new permit and keep the permit and materials in each laboratory safety
manual.  No need to post permits on walls or doors.
