N E W    A P P O I N T M E N T S :   Welcome to Mary Campbell and Judd Walson who become  Acting
    Instructors in our Division Sept 1.  Mary’s research has focused upon molecular epidemiological approaches to
    HIV biology and epidemiology under the mentorship of James Mullins and Geoff Gottlieb.  Working in Dr.
    Mullin’s laboratory, she has completed a study evaluating HIV transmission between chronically infected sexual
    partners.  Mary has also taken on other projects looking at drug resistance mutations in HIV sub-type III infected
    persons in South Africa and has recently received a KO8 Award.  Judd has been based in Nairobi, Kenya, where
    he has undertaken studies to determine associations between various non-genital co-infections and HIV, including a
    randomized controlled treatment trial for helminthic infections in patients with HIV.  He has established a new
    laboratory in Nairobi for immunological studies and has received training in parasitology at the London School of
    Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. 

C H A N G E S :    Chia Wang, who was a fellow here prior to being an Assistant Professor for the past three years,
    has accepted a position with the VMMC and will be leaving us this month.  We wish her all the best in her new
    position.  The Division is currently in the process of offering Chia a Clinical Assistant position.

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S :   to Tom Hawn who recently received a two-year grant from the Heiser Program
    for Research in Leprosy and Tuberculosis of the New York Community Trust.
        The title of his study is, " Genetic Variation in Toll-like Receptors and Susceptibility to Leprosy."

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S :   to Tim Dellit for his election to the IDSA’s State and Regional Society’s Boards. 
    Tim has been an Assistant Professor in our Division since 2003 and he serves as the Medical Director for both the    
    Antimicrobial and Antimicrobial Resistance Management and Control of Dangerous Pathogens Program and the
    Infectious Disease Clinic at Harborview.

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S :   to Dennis Stevens for being awarded a VA Merit Review Grant to study Molecular
    Mechanisms of Cardia Dysfunction in Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome.

S C I E N C E     I N    M E D I C I N E      L E C T U R E :    The School of Public Health and Community Medicine in
    conjunction with the Department of Global Health Lecture Series and the School of Medicine, Science in Medicine Lecture
    Series’ featured lecturer, Christopher J.L. Murray, MD, DPhil (Institute Director, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation
    and Professor of Global Health) will present a lecture titled, “Evaluating the Performance of National Medical Care and Public
    Health ystems,” in Hogness Auditorium, A-420, Health Sciences Center, Thursday, October 4, 2007, from 4:00pm to 5:00pm.
