AIDS Clinical Trials Unit

The AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) at the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center is one of 15 centers sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to do research studies (clinical trials) of new medicines for HIV-infected men, women, and children. The Centers evaluate new drugs both to control AIDS infection and to treat opportunistic infections associated with AIDS.

AIDS Vaccine Evaluation Unit

The AIDS Vaccine Evaluation Unit at the University of Washington is one of six centers in the U.S. funded by the National Institutes of Health to conduct HIV vaccine testing. The primary goal of the organization is to develop a vaccine which will prevent people from becoming infected with HIV.

Center for AIDS Research

The University of Washington Center for AIDS Research, established in July, 1989, coordinates and oversees a wide variety of programs that provide patient care and conduct research and training in the areas of HIV/AIDS and STDs. The Center also collaborates in and oversees international investigations. The mission for the Center is to prevent transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infection, and to reduce human suffering caused by these infections.

Center for Health Education and Research

The Center for Health Education and Research (CHER) consists of multidisciplinary teams of educators and healthcare professionals who are devoted to the organization's mission of enhancing health and quality of life for individuals and communities through education, training, and research.  The Northwest AIDS Education and Training Center (NW AETC),  Seattle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center, and many other training, research, and academic programs are tied to our center.

Hepatitis Web Study

The Hepatitis Web Study website features interactive case studies that cover a broad array of topics related to the prevention, management, and treatment of viral hepatitis.  The site developed by Drs. Jeanne Marrazzo, David Spach and their colleagues.  The Dr. Marrazzo is the Medical Director of the Seattle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center and an Associate Professor of
Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the
University of Washington.  Dr. Spach is the Director and a Medical Educator at the Northwest Aids Education and Training Center.  He is also a Professor of Medicine, in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington.

HIV Web Study

An HIV education site developed and maintained by Dr. David Spach M.D. and his colleagues.  Dr. Spach is the Director and a Medical Educator at the NW AETC, Northwest Aids Education and Training Center.  He is also a Professor of Medicine, in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington.

International AIDS Research and Training Program

The International AIDS Research and Training Program was initiated in 1988 with two grants from the Fogarty International Center with a primary goal of fostering international collaborative AIDS research through bilateral scientist exchange. The IARTP sponsors foreign researchers who have come to the University of Washington for study and provides funding for the University of Washington faculty to study abroad.

Northwest Regional Center of Excellence

The Northwest Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases centers on Research to help protect the public from potential bioterrorism, and diseases that present persistent and emerging threats to global health.

NW AIDS Education and Training Center

The Northwest AIDS Education and Training Center (NW AETC), located at the University of Washington, offers HIV treatment education, clinical consultation, capacity building and technical assistance to health care professionals and agencies in Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho and Oregon.

The purpose of the NW AETC is to increase providers' capacity to provide high quality HIV/AIDS care within the region's health care systems.

Our target audience includes doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dental professional, clinical pharmacists, and other members of the health care team.  We train providers from Ryan White CARE Act funded agencies, federally funded community and migrant health centers, tribal health clinics, state and local health departments, corrections facilities and private practice settings serving persons with HIV and AIDS.
As the epidemic disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities in the region, the NW AETC offers Minority AIDS Initiative programming specifically targeting minority providers, providers serving HIV-infected persons of color, and minority-specific community based organizations.
The Northwest AETC also offers a national education program on palliative care issues related to HIV/AIDS.
The NW AETC is part of a network of regional AETCs that cover the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration, the national AETC network is the professional training arm of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resource Emergency (CARE) Act.

Seattle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center

The Seattle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center offers training to health care providers and educators in Federal Region X (Washington, Alaska, Idaho, and Oregon) on the prevention, diagnosis, management, and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. The Center sponsors 20-25 courses each year to provide this training to practitioners in the region.

STD Online Case Series

The STD Online Case Series is a web-based series of interactive case studies offering free CME, CNE and CEUs.  The site was designed for practicing clinicians who diagnose, treat and manage patients with, or at risk for, sexually transmitted disease (STD), and was developed by the Seattle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center at the University of Washington, the National Network of STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Virology Research Clinic

The major mission of the Virology Research Clinic is to investigate the epidemiology and natural history of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) and to evaluate new therapies and vaccines for HSV. Currently, our special areas of interest are prevention of HSV transmission with daily antiviral therapy and the interactions between HSV and HIV.
