THEME: Faculty and Academics

You are registered for your 1st quarter of classes, but that doesn't mean that you don't have any academic concerns. There are always questions about grades, workload, choosing classes, course availability, and choosing a major.

Events and workshops within the Faculty and Academics track will build upon your Summer Advising & Orientation session, and are designed to alleviate your academic worries. Talk with a faculty member before classes begin, explore academic departments, check-out various majors, and figure out how to use those many libraries, long before your first assignment is due.

The Civil War - Beyond the Battles and Untold Stories

Our Civil War often refers just to battles and generals, but underneath the story are failed attempts to reach compromises that could have avoided it. We will look at the pre-war events and the roles they played in pushing us into secession and war. During the war we'll see the changing objectives of the Union, near intervention of England, implications of several military campaigns, the Confederacy's collapse and the legacy for the next century. We'll explore the strange personalities of the military and civilian leaders whose decisions influenced the conduct of the war and the peace that followed.

It houses more than 2 million volumes of humanities and social sciences research materials, the Natural Sciences Library, as well as a number of specialized units and collections. It also hosts one of the busiest and most unique coffee shops on the Seattle campus. At some point in your studies, this is a library you will use. Come take a preview of this remarkable resource.

Large Lectures Success Strategies Sessions

Mapping Your Future: What Direction Are Your Genes Taking?

Learn about the School of Medicine's Institute for Surgical & Interventional Simulation (ISIS), where medical simulators help teach students and young doctors how to care for patients and manage medical emergencies. Find out what's going on in the Schools of Public Health and Community Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Social Work. Dentistry will be handing out toothbrushes. UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, and the CHDD Experimental Education Unit will be on hand to sign up student volunteers. Music, food, and up to 25 interactive and informative exhibits are on tap.
