Todays article comes from MSN.com Health & Fitness section and is titled Adopted Children at Slightly Higher Mental Health Risk. HYPERLINK "http://health.msn.com/health-topics/adhd/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100202765" http://health.msn.com/health-topics/adhd/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100202765. This article discusses recent findings that show that adopted children score higher than non-adoptees on measures of behavioral and emotional problems. The article is based on a study conducted at the University of Minnesota looking at mental health of adolescents adopted in infancy. The article points out that approximately 120,000 children are adopted annually and that an increasing number of these are adopted internationally. The article points to findings in the study that adopted children are more likely to exhibit an externalizing disorder (ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder [ODD]) than an internalizing disorder (major depressive disorder and separation anxiety), and among adoptees, domestically adopted children more likely to exhibit externalizing disorders than internationally adopted children. There was no evidence presented that demonstrated that adoption is causing these problems and emphasis was made on not stigmatizing these children. Importantly, there were limitations in the study design to consider; for example, non-adopted children originated in Minnesota, and their ethnic diversity was limited to that Minnesota sample, likely less heterogeneous than the international adoptees. Pediatricians are often the gateway from these children into the health care system. As for all children, adopted children and their families require adequate surveillance and screening for psychosocial problems, with appropriate referral.
