The DDI group researches issues of information and communication technologies for underserved communities and resource-constrained environments in the US and around the world.
Major group effort in early 2007 is focused on developing mobile social software MoSoSo
that addresses activities of everyday life (adl). Our current implementation
focuses on Kyrgyzstan and the pain points identified by our research team during
a design ethnography in summer 2006.
We are also using data from our recent design ethnography in Kyrgyzstan to develop MoSoSo applications that address ADL issues in resource-rich environments. By using the resource-constrained use scenarios as an analytical model, we are able to identify potential creative repurposing of ICTs.
Findings from our data analysis and
software prototyping should be relevant for resource constrained computing
environments generally.

WWW 2007: At the WWW 2007 conference we will present "Communication as Information-Seeking: The Case for Mobile Social Software for Developing Regions" which uses findings from a multi-method, longitudinal study to demonstrate how information and communication technologies are diffusing differentially in the world and why MoSoSo holds particular promise in resource-constrained environments.
