Launched in 2007 as a collaborative effort between the Alaska Native Tribal Health Center and the University of Washington, DENTEX was developed to meet the oral health needs of native Alaskan people across 200 remote villages.

In February, staff reflected on the last four years as we wrote our report narrative for WK Kellogg Foundation. We realized that in spite of some extreme setbacks, Alaska DHAT has accomplished its objectives, and then some: in villages currently served by DHATs, over 35,000 more people in rural Alaska now have access to oral healthcare.

Patient Profile

Sinea WilliamsBethel, AK

“Before the DHAT clinic Bethel dental services were chaotic. It was hard to get an appointment. Typically the waiting time was so long you thought to go somewhere else. Here, it is unbelievably simple.  The Alaska native DHATs make the experience more comfortable.  I was skeptical at first because I know the DHATs are just learning, but they ask a lot of questions, tell you step-by-step what’s going on, and tell you what the plan is. I am very confident in the DHAT program and students.”

Louise Achey, PhD

Instructor

Teacher, pharmacist, and firefighter, Dr. Louise Achey has been involved in health and fitness for the past 3 decades.  She completed her Doctor of Pharmacy from Idaho State University in 1994.  She has practiced pharmacy in hospitals, nursing homes and community pharmacies for the past 32 years, the last ten teaching safe and effective drug therapy to new doctors, physician assistants, pharmacy, and dental therapist students.  After joining a local rural volunteer fire department in 1990, she served 14 years, first as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician, then for 7 years as Fire Captain, responsible for all firefighter training.  Determined to improve her physical fitness despite all the demands on her time, Louise has researched, learned and tested many approaches to physical fitness and health.  A passionate teacher, Dr. Achey has won 4 awards for teaching excellence with the University of Washington MEDEX Northwest Physician Assistant training program and has taught in Washington State University’s College of Pharmacy and Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Louise treasures time with her family: husband Charlie, daughter Maureen, and their 3 Scottish Terriers. She also plays a 36-string Heartland harp at church on Sundays.
