DENTEX is an Alaska based program that educates dental health aide therapists to provide dental care to Alaska Native communities. The program is a collaboration between the Alaska Native Health Consortium and the University of Washington School of Medicine Physician Assistant Training Program, MEDEX Northwest.

Launched in 2007 as a collaborative effort between the Alaska Native Tribal Health Center and the University of Washington, DENTEX was developed to meet the oral health needs of native Alaskan people across 200 remote villages.

In February, staff reflected on the last four years as we wrote our report narrative for WK Kellogg Foundation. We realized that in spite of some extreme setbacks, Alaska DHAT has accomplished its objectives, and then some: in villages currently served by DHATs, over 35,000 more people in rural Alaska now have access to oral healthcare.

“Alaska is a big state and access can be difficult especially with the conditions of weather or with the expensive of travel. So having a DHAT placed in a village setting is both rewarding and beneficial for the people. I see the dental therapists as a new mainstream for dental prevention, working together as a team with all occupations of the dental field. We’re a new kind of provider, a profession that has so much promise to the future of oral health. I see all the smiles and gratitude the patients have for the services we provide and I’m proud to be here helping. It warms my heart and gives me the sense that I’m doing something right.”

Dennis Raymond

Communications Program Manager

Dennis Raymond acted as the project manager for the 2012 refresh of the DENTEX website, collaborating with the leadership and developer to deliver a strong advocacy tool for the DHAT concept. He has a background in marketing, software development and strategic planning, and currently works as the Communications Program Manager for MEDEX Northwest in Seattle, WA. Dennis has traveled extensively—living and working in SE Asia over different periods of time. This has resulted in cultural awareness and sensitivity towards others outside our Western way of life.
