Graduate and Professional Certificate Programs
Certificate
Program in Biomedical and Health Informatics, School of Medicine
The BHI Certificate Program is designed to address the biomedical informatics
training needs of graduate and professional students currently enrolled
in selected UW graduate programs. Currently the Certificate is offered
to students in the Schools of Nursing and Public Health, as well as the
Information School. Students enrolled in these programs may elect the
certificate option to supplement their regular program coursework with
a structured subset of courses offered in the BHI graduate program curriculum.
There are plans to add other programs in the future, so interested UW
students should contact the BHI office if they would like to pursue the
Certificate.
Center
for AIDS and STDs, Multidisciplinary Graduate Certificate Program in
AIDS & STDs
The program provides training and context for
the global AIDS epidemic, arguably the most pressing public health
issue of our time. It aims to equip future professionals in health
and social science disciplines to address the complex interplay of
biomedical, social, economic, gender, political and geographic factors
that impact the spread and disease course of AIDS & STIs. Controlling
these epidemics will require comprehensive strategies across sectors
and countries; this program will provide a framework and interdisciplinaryfoundation
for making this possible.
The
Environmental Management Certificate Program
Our current and future
generation of environmental managers faces unprecedented challenges:
advances in science and technology, businesses moving toward integrating
the environment as a core strategy, and growing public awareness of
the role of the environment in healthy communities and sustainable
economies. The University of Washington's Environmental Management
Program is based on the idea that managing the most important environmental
problems and opportunities requires a team of professionals from diverse
fields with multidisciplinary problem solving skills. In the Environmental
Management Program, graduate students from across the University collaborate
to tackle real-world problems with profound policy, scientific, and
business ramifications.
Global
Health Pathway
School of Medicine and Department of Global Health developed
the GHP which aims to: Prepare medical students for work in underserved
communities; increase medical students' cultural competence; encourage
research on global health issues; raise awareness of ethical issues
related to global health; and introduce students to the challenges
of practicing in resource poor settings. The Global Health Pathway
will provide medical students with the information and experiences
necessary to practice in underserved communities both here and abroad.
Courses are available in UCONJ 501:International Health, Med 560: Advanced
Topics in Global Health, Med 561:Tropical Medicine in addition to other
courses offered in global health available through the Health Sciences
schools.
Global Trade, Transportation
and Logistics Studies (GTTL) Option Program
The aim of this program is to help prepare students for careers in trade,
transportation, and logistics. Students completing this option receive
a Certificate as well as a notation on their transcript and a Letter
of Achievement from their dean and the Graduate School.
Graduate
Certificate in Global Health
The Department of Global Health offers a Graduate Certificate in Global Health
to students already enrolled in University of Washington
graduate degree programs. The certificate makes possible focused study
in the area of international health in a curriculum that emphasizes
the sociopolitical, economic, and geographic factors that, in addition
to biomedical factors, have an impact on health in developing countries.
Acceptance in to the certificate program will be awarded on a space-available
basis.
Graduate Certificate
Program in Health Behavior and Health Promotion
The
School of Public
Health and Community Medicine offers this Graduate Certificate to serve students with an interest
in additional academic training in the social and behavioral aspects
of health behavior and health promotion as well as students who want
to be trained specifically to pass the CHES exam
(Certified Health Education Specialist).
Graduate
Certificate Program in Health Policy (CHP)
The
School of Public
Health and Community Medicine offers this Graduate Certificate to students already enrolled in
University of Washington graduate degree programs. Priority is given
to students enrolled in programs within the School of Public Health.
Applications are accepted throughout the year and reviewed quarterly.
Students will qualify for the certificate upon completion of three
required courses, elective courses, and a capstone project.
Graduate
Certificate Program, International Development Policy and Management
The
certificate program is designed to complement graduate degrees in the
social and natural sciences or professional programs. It is housed
within the Evans School of Public Affairs, with additional electives
offered by the College of Forest Resources, the School of Nursing,
the School of Public Health & Community Medicine, and the Department
of Anthropology. Tuition support for participating international students
is available from the Office of International Programs and Exchanges.
Graduate
Certificate Program in Maternal & Child Health,
The
School of Public
Health and Community Medicine offers this Graduate Certificate
Maternal & Child Health offers a coherent course of study for students
interested in maternal and child health (MCH) content and tools. Students
currently enrolled in any graduate program at the University of Washington
(UW) may apply. Preference is given to students with demonstrated experience
in MCH.
Graduate Certificate
in Women Studies
After looking over the information for the Women
Studies Graduate Program at the University of Washington, you may
decide that our department does not suitably match your educational
goals. However, should you be accepted into a different graduate program
at the University of Washington, you have the option of obtaining a
Graduate Certificate in Women Studies.The program seeks to enable U.W.
graduate students to acquire skills and competencies in three general
areas: 1) General interdisciplinary knowledge of the scope of feminist
studies; 2) Feminist theory and method; 3) Competence in feminist methods
in a specific field.
Infectious
Disease and Infection Control Nursing, Post-Masters Certificate
Nurses
who have a master's degree or who are currently matriculated
UW graduate students can develop a certificate program of study in
infectious disease or infection control. This graduate certificate,
designed to enhance knowledge, clinical experiences, or scientific
inquiry, prepares nurses to face emerging areas of threats to health
from infectious diseases or infections. The certificate is designed
for completion in two (full-time) to four (part-time) quarters of study.
The Infectious Disease and Infection Control Nursing (IDICN) Certificate
is designed to equip nurses and scholars with a focused area of study
in basic science, nursing, and elective courses to supplement their
area of practice or scholarship.
Intellectual
Property Law and Policy, UW School of Law, provides graduate students
with a generalfoundation in intellectual property law, exposure to
the increasing scope of technologies and products seeking intellectual
property protections, and access to advanced courses particularly relevant
to their individual field of study.
Interdisciplinary
and Policy Dimensions of the Earth Sciences
Humans both affect and are affected by planetary systems. At the turn
of the 21st century, for the first time in the history of the planet,
through population growth, human land use patterns, energy consumption,
and a wide range of environmental pollutants, human actions have impacts
on a planetary scale. The Earth Sciences play an indispensable role in
a safe and prosperous society, but too often scientific wisdom does not
translate to wise decision-making. This innovative new program provides
graduate students in the Earth sciences a forum to explore interdisciplinary
and policy dimensions of their science, and extend their graduate research
to encompass those dimensions. Students earn a graduate degree in the
home department, with the collaborative component recognized by the Graduate
School as a Certificate in “Interdisciplinary and Policy Dimensions
of the Earth Sciences”.
Masters
of Medical Engineering Program
Bioengineering,The program's core
curriculum consists of four certificate programs completed over four
years: Basic Medical Sciences, Medical Diagnostics, Medical Devices
and Commercialization; and Biosensors and Biomaterials. The MME program
is an evening degree program specifically designed to allow working
professionals in the local engineering community to increase their
level of training in the biological and medical fields. The program's
main goal is to prepare professionals to develop technologies and products
that will become the standard of healthcare in the near future.
School
of Pharmacy Certificate Programs, including Certificate Program
in Geriatric Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacy Management Program. Certificate
Program in Biomedical Regulatory Affairs and Certificate Program in
Clinical Trials.
Undergraduate Certificate Programs
Certificate
of International Studies in Business (CISB),
The certificate was
created in 1992 with support from the Center for International Business,
Education and Research at the University of Washington addresses
the demand for managers with strong business skills as well as knowledge
of international issues and business practices, cultural sensitivity
and drive. The CISB program prepares students to become leaders in
a globally interdependent, culturally diverse and technology- driven
business world. It is one of the largest, most comprehensive of its
kind in the country, with over 130 students enrolled. Open
to undergraduates enrolled in the UW Business School.
UW
Tacoma, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate Program
The
University of Washington, Tacoma offers courses leading to a certificate
in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). It is co-administered by the
Urban Studies and Environmental Science programs. The certificate program
consists of a 24-credit series of courses which starts every autumn
and progresses for 3 consecutive quarters. This program will most benefit
entry-level and intermediate-level GIS users who lack formal education
in geography or GIS.

The
Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program
The Humphrey Fellowship program
brings accomplished mid-career
professionals from designated countries of Asia, Africa, the Caribbean,
Latin America, the Middle East and Eurasia to the United States for
one year of non-degree graduate study and practical, work-related experience.
Fellowships are awarded in the fields of: natural resources & environmental
management; public policy analysis & public administration; economic
development; agricultural development; finance & banking; human
resource management; business; drug abuse prevention; educational planning;
public health; technology policy; urban/regional planning; law, human
rights, democratic development; and communications/journalism.
Population
Leadership Program
The University of Washington Population Leadership
Program awards fellowships to accomplished professionals and leaders
from developing countries whose careers focus on population, family
planning and reproductive health issues. The Program seeks professionals
who have already demonstrated leadership or expertise in their areas
of responsibility and would benefit from a year of reflection and rigorous
work to develop stronger management and leadership skills and knowledge.

Emerging
Infections and Biopreparedness (online course)
Emerging infectious
diseases pose a challenge for public health and health care systems
across the globe. While newly discovered diseases continue to emerge,
many diseases maintain a persistent stronghold on communities all over
the world. Countries must be prepared to address the emergence of new
diseases. The Emerging Infections and Biopreparedness online certificate
program has been designed by University of Washington for public health
managers and both public and private officials who have the responsibility
for either developing a proactive bio-response effort to infectious
disease outbreak or managing the bio-response effort.

and Adolescent Mental Health - Students gain new knowledge and skills
to provide more effective mental health services to children, adolescents
and their families; and Geriatric
Mental Health - Students increase their understanding of the acute
and chronic mental health needs of older adults and gain important practical
skills in diagnosing and treating these needs.
