University of Washington

American Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington is a multicultural and multiracial research and teaching unit, dedicated to providing knowledge in the study of race and ethnicity. Through the department's three curricula -- Afro-American Studies, Asian/Pacific American Studies, and Chicano Studies -- students learn interdisciplinary, ethnic-specific, and comparative concepts, theories, and methods of inquiry, which shape the cultural, literary, social, historical, economic, and political character of selected American ethnic communities.

The Canadian Studies Center is part of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. It joins with the Center for Canadian-American Studies at Western Washington University in Bellingham to create a federally supported Pacific Northwest National Resource Center for the Study of Canada.

Pacific Northwest Canadian Studies Consortium
The mission of the PNWCSC is to facilitate the development of Canadian Studies at institutions of higher education in the Pacific Northwest, and to enhance cooperation, joint programming, and information sharing among Canadian Studies programs and faculty in the Pacific region. PNWCSC acts as a clearinghouse for information about Canadian Studies programs and faculties, sponsors and organizes conferences and training activities, provides technical assistance to Canadian Studies programs and faculties, enhances the acquisition and sharing of library resources, organizes faculty and student exchange programs, encourages research on Canada, establishes and maintains appropriate relations with other Canadian Studies organizations, and secures funding to support achievement of the above listed activities as well as other activities deemed appropriate by the Consortium's Board of Directors.

USA

American Dental Association (ADA) was established in 1859. Today there are more than 149,000 members. As the world's largest and oldest dental association, they are the oral health authority committed to both the public and to the dental profession.

American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.7 million registered nurses (RNs) through its 54 constituent member associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the national professional society of pharmacists, founded in 1852 as the American Pharmaceutical Association, is the first established and largest professional association of pharmacists in the United States. The more than 50,000 members of APhA include practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and others interested in advancing the profession. The Association is a leader in providing professional information and education for pharmacists and an advocate for improved health of the American public through the provision of comprehensive pharmaceutical care.

American Public Health Association (APHA) is the oldest and largest organization of public health professionals in the world, representing more than 50,000 members from over 50 occupations of public health.

The American Social Health Association is recognized by the public, patients, providers and policy makers for developing and delivering accurate, medically reliable information about STDs. ASHA is a trusted, non-governmental resource that has advocated on behalf of patients to help improve public health outcomes since 1914.

Human Rights Campaign
As America's largest gay and lesbian organization, the Human Rights Campaign provides a national voice on gay and lesbian issues. The Human Rights Campaign effectively lobbies Congress; mobilizes grassroots action in diverse communities; invests strategically to elect a fair-minded Congress; and increases public understanding through innovative education and communication strategies.

The NAACP insures the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority groups and citizens; achieves equality of rights and eliminates race prejudice among the citizens of the United States; removes all barriers of racial discrimination through the democratic processes; seeks to enact and enforce federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights; informs the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and seeks its elimination; educates persons as to their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action in furtherance of these principles.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with 153,000 members. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
Founded in 1973, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation (the Task Force) was the first national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization and remains the movement's leading voice for freedom, justice, and equality.

Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) promotes health by protecting human rights. We believe that human rights are essential preconditions for the health and well-being of all people. Using medical and scientific methods, we investigate and expose violations of human rights worldwide and we work to stop them. We support institutions that hold perpetrators of human rights abuses, including health professionals, accountable for their actions. We educate health professionals and medical, public health and nursing students and organize them to become active in supporting a movement for human rights and creating a culture of human rights in the medical and scientific professions.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. is the world's largest and most trusted voluntary reproductive health care organization. Founded by Margaret Sanger in 1916 as America's first birth control clinic, Planned Parenthood believes in everyone's right to choose when or whether to have a child, that every child should be wanted and loved, and that women should be in charge of their own destinies.

United for a Fair Economy is a national, independent, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. UFE raises awareness that concentrated wealth and power undermine the economy, corrupt democracy, deepen the racial divide, and tear communities apart. We support and help build social movements for greater equality.

Canada

Association of Canadian Studies in the US, ACSUS is now the largest organization of Canadian studies specialists in the world. ACSUS coordinates programs and further research in Canadian studies and works closely with academics, business executives, and government officials in striving for an improved understanding of issues affecting the Canada-U.S. bilateral relationship. ACSUS also works as a liaison with regional Canadian studies associations as well as the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) in order to provide ACSUS members with a broad base of information, research, and networking opportunities to draw upon.

The Canada-America Society was founded in 1976 to promote greater understanding, friendship and goodwill between the people of Canada and the United States; to foster cross-border business relationships; and, to increase the knowledge of Canadian culture.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is an independent, pan-Canadian, not-for-profit organization working to improve the health of Canadians and the health care system by providing quality, reliable and timely health information.

The Centre for Social Justice is an advocacy organization that seeks to strengthen the struggle for social justice. We are committed to working for change in partnership with various social movements and recognize that effective change requires the active participation of all sectors of our community. Although the Centre is based in Ontario, our work increasingly takes us across Canada and into the international arena. The programmatic content of the Centre's work may change from year to year, but there is an on-going interest in working strategically to narrow the gap between rich and poor, challenging the corporate domination of Canadian politics, and pressing for policy changes that promote economic and social justice.
