Study: Global-Health Efforts Give State Shot in the Arm

Work aimed at improving global health is enriching Washington's economy, creating $4.1 billion in business activity and supporting 44,000 jobs, according to a University of Washington study from William Beyers, professor of geography; Amy Hagopian, professor in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine; Jennifer Devine, co-director of the Global Washington Initiative; and Sally Weatherford, finance and administration director of the Department of Global Health.

University of Washington Launches New Institute to Evaluate International Health Program

The UW announced the creation of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, a new research center that will conduct independent, rigorous evaluations of health programs worldwide. It will be funded by a $105 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and $20 million from the University of Washington.

Judith N. Wasserheit, MD, MPH, Named Vice Chair of the Department of Global Health
Department of Global Health website
Dr.Wasserheit, who joined the Department of Global Health in January 2007, was formerly director of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, a global clinical trials platform linking 28 sites on four continents to evaluate preventive HIV vaccines. She also directed the Division of STD Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and was founding chief of the STD Research Branch of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.
