NGO Code of Conduct Hopes to Stem Internal Brain Drain

Health Alliance International, a large service-based organization at UW, coordinated efforts to create an international NGO Code of Conduct to bolster the public sector in the countries which they operate. So far, 25 NGOs, including Physicians for Human Rights, Oxfam UK, and Partners in Health, have signed the pledge.

UW Institute of Health Metrics & Evaluation Conference a Success
About 300 public health officials and researchers from around the world gathered April 10-11 for a two-day conference aimed at improving methods for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating global health data, including information on HIV/AIDS. UW Researchers Say Comprehensive Sex Ed Cuts Pregnancies

MHA Student Named One of CNN's Heroes

Peter Kithene, a first year student in the Master of Health Administration program, has been named one of six CNN Heroes. Kithene founded the Mama Maria health clinic, which provides medical care and HIV/AIDS education to the rural village in Kenya where he was raised. View an interview with Peter on the CNN website.

Study: Global-Health Efforts Give State Shot in the Arm

University of Washington Launches New Institute to Evaluate International Health Program

The UW announced the creation of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, a new research center that will conduct independent, rigorous evaluations of health programs worldwide. It will be funded by a $105 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and $20 million from the University of Washington.

Judith N. Wasserheit, MD, MPH, Named Vice Chair of the Department of Global Health

Dr.Wasserheit, who joined the Department of Global Health in January 2007, was formerly director of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, a global clinical trials platform linking 28 sites on four continents to evaluate preventive HIV vaccines. She also directed the Division of STD Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and was founding chief of the STD Research Branch of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

The UW School of Medicine and the UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine will establish a jointly operated Department of Global Health, pending approval at the January meeting of the UW Board of Regents. A $20 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will help fund this interdisciplinary program.
