Graduate Certificate

Graduate Certificate in Global Health

A graduate certificate program is a linked series of credit bearing graduate courses that constitutes a coherent body of study and culminates in a capstone or equivalent unifying experience. The Graduate Certificate in Global Health is intended to enhance the education of matriculated graduate or professional students beyond their regular course of study, or to provide continuing education to graduate non-matriculated (GNM) students. As such, they are not open to undergraduates or other categories of students. The Global Health curriculum emphasizes the sociopolitical, economic, and geographic factors that, in addition to biomedical factors, have an impact on health in developing countries.

Applications are accepted throughout the year and reviewed quarterly.

Students will qualify for the certificate upon completion of 15 credits of approved coursework, a global health work experience, and a capstone project. Completed graduate certificates are recorded on the student’s UW transcript.

Requirements

15 Credits of Coursework

Certificate students must take a minimum of 15 credits from the list of approved courses.

Core course requirements of a degree program may not be counted toward the certificate, and the overlap of coursework applied toward both the degree and certificate program must not exceed 6 credits and is liminted to elective coursework in both programs. Therefore students are strongly encouraged to work with the coordinator of their degree program and with Certificate staff to develop a specific course plan that will meet the requirements of both the degree and the certificate.

NOTE: The UW Graduate School requires that at least 9 of the total 15 credits be taken for a grade. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required in all graded courses and a grade of 2.7 or above is necessary for any individual course to count toward the certificate. Required courses must be taken for a grade if that option is available.

The Graduate Certificate Program does not accept course substitutions to fulfill credit requirements or electives. You must take courses from the approved list provided on this website.

To petition for a course to be added to the list of certificate electives, please submit a complete syllabus including all class sessions and readings. Bear in mind that to be considered, the course must include a minimum of 50% developing country content and must also be health related. Please allow a minimum of one full quarter for faculty and curriculum committee review. (For example, for a Spring course to be considered, please submit your proposal at the beginning of Winter quarter.)

Global Health Work Experience

Certificate participants are required to spend a minimum of 4 weeks working in a public health setting in a developing country. This experience can be obtained either prior to or during their participation in the certificate program. Prior experience will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Certificate staff. Experience from longer than 5 years ago may be considered only if especially focused on public health and for extended periods of time.

In many cases international, health-related practicum or thesis research experiences can be used to satisfy this requirement.  This work experience must be arranged by the student and should be approved by Certificate staff, and planned well in advance of the anticipated graduation date.

Capstone Project

All participants must complete a capstone project as a culmination of their certificate program. This project must be completed while enrolled in their UW graduate program (not prior to enrollment). The project must be a service or research project that integrates aspects of global health that impact developing country populations. If your global health work experience (outlined in the above section) will occur while enrolled in your degree program, it may also serve as your capstone project. If your global health work experience occurred prior to your enrollment in your degree program, you must do a separate capstone project. In this case, (because you have already satisfied the global health work experience requirement), the capstone project does not necessarily have to take place in a developing country setting. However the project must directly relate to issues relevant to global health. (For example, work with immigrant populations in the US or research related to health problems of direct relevance to developing country populations could be appropriate capstone projects for someone with prior international health work experience.)

NOTE: It is not advisable to begin working on a capstone project without receiving approval from the Certificate staff.

All students completing the certificate are required to present their capstone projects at a special capstone presentation session in Spring quarter. Students each develop a poster for display at the session, give a short (5 minute) presentation and answer questions from attendees.

Please read the following instructions for tips on how to prepare a poster.

Finding a Work Experience and/or Capstone Project

Students are expected to find their own global work experience and capstone projects. Once students have a working plan for their capstone, they must complete the Planning Form/Progress Report and email it to the Certificate Program staff at ghprog@u.washington.edu where it will be reviewed.

Resources for Finding Projects:

Global Health Resource Center (GHRC)
The GHRC is an invaluable resource for any student interested in global health issues. Their staff is available for individual appointments or email inquiries to assist students in locating University of Washington faculty working internationally as well as funding opportunities to support international experiences. The GHRC has a “jobs” distribution list that sometimes advertises internships as well as an “events” distribution list of events/lectures in the area. See their webpage, GHRC for more information and to sign up for these lists.

Global Health Seminar
Attending the Global Health seminar (G H 500/EPI 592B - Fridays at 12:30pm – required 3 quarters for the certificate) provides an excellent opportunity for students to network and discover who is doing what work where.

IHP email list
The Global Health MPH has an email forum which is a good source for global health news/articles/discussions among faculty, students, alumni and community members. Occasionally information about international health internships is posted.  Sign up at  for the list serv.

Completing the Certificate

Prior to graduation, all certificate participants must turn in the final version of completion report for approval by the program. Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Global Health will be acknowledged on the student's official UW transcript. The student must be a matriculated UW graduate student during the quarter the graduate certificate is awarded. Certificates cannot be awarded retroactively.

Application Information

Students may apply to the Global Health Certificate program at any time and applications will be reviewed quarterly. A campus-wide information session will be held at the beginning of each quarter so that potential participants can ask questions. We prefer that you attend one of these sessions if possible rather than contacting our office for individual appointments.
