The mission of the Division of Dermatology is to provide outstanding patient care, train and mentor future leaders in dermatology, and advance dermatologic knowledge. We provide high quality patient care at multiple sites in the greater Seattle area, in conjunction with one of the nation's top dermatologic residency and training programs. Paul Nghiem Appointed to Endowed Chair

Paul Nghiem was appointed to the Michael W. Piepkorn Endowed Chair in Dermatology, effective October 1, 2011. Dr. Nghiem is currently associate professor of medicine and adjunct associate professor of pathology, as well as an affiliate investigator in the Clinical Research Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He is director of the Skin Oncology Clinical Program at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. In addition to his extensive teaching, mentoring, and clinical work, he leads an active research program in Merkel cell carcinoma and other malignancies. His recent investigations of the protective effects of caffeine against photodamage of the skin has attracted wide attention in the media.
   The Piepkorn Chair was established in 2007 by Dr. Piepkorn, a clinical professor in the division and a graduate of the UW Dermatology Residency Program. He received a Ph.D. from UW and has served for many years as a dermatologist, dermatopathologist, and investigator whose research is focused on melanoma.

Dr. John Olerud Receives Distinguished Alumnus Award from Washington State University

Division Head John Olerud, MD, has been named recipient of the 2011 Washington State University Regents' Distinguished Alumnus Award. He will receive WSU's highest alumni award honor during fall commencement ceremonies on December 10, 2011 in Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum in Pullman. Dr. Olerud will give a talk that is open to the public on Friday, December 9 at 2 PM in Bryan Hall Theatre at WSU called "How Life and Science Are Like Baseball." Congratulations, Dr. Olerud! Dr. James Vary Wins a Golden Eddy for Outstanding Patient and Family Education

Assistant Professor James Vary, M.D., Ph.D., just won a Golden Eddy for Outstanding Patient and Family Education for creating patient handouts used by Dermatology faculty. Well done, Dr. Vary!
