Dermatology Residency Program

Thank you for your interest in the University of Washington Dermatology Residency Program. The Application Process for the Match for the class starting July 1, 2009, has been completed and the Match results are known.

Congratulations to the following applicants who will be joining the UW Dermatology Residency Program in 2009:

  • Erin Moore, MD (University of Washington)
  • Jonathon Olson, MD (University of Washington)

Application Process
Application Deadline: October 31, 2008
Interview Dates: January 9 and 16, 2009 (tentative)

The University of Washington accepts applications only through the ERAS system from applicants registered for the NRMP Match. A complete application, received through the ERAS system by October 31, 2009, includes:

·         ERAS Common Application Form

·         Personal Statement (1-2 pages)

·         Curriculum Vitae

·         Official Medical School Transcripts

·         Dean’s Letter (Medical School Performance Evaluation)

·         Three Letters of Reference – from faculty, mentors, or supervisors who can address your performance and commitment to the study of Dermatology

·         USMLE Scores

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered and paper applications received outside of the ERAS system will be discarded.

Because of the large number of applications, the review process is distributed among the dermatology faculty. Each faculty member serves as the primary reviewer for approximately 45 applications. Each is charged with selecting approximately 10-14 semi-finalists. Applicants are judged on the basis of academic performance, personal initiative, and letters of recommendation. Applicants who successfully pass the first screening are referred to a committee of at least three secondary reviewers. These semi-finalist applicants are judged on productive scholarship, motivation, capacity for independent work, and appropriateness of "fit" with clinical and research activities at the University of Washington. The secondary reviewers divide the semi-finalist applications to select potential finalists. The Dermatology Residency Program Director reads all semi-finalist applications. A list of 25-30 finalists and alternates is compiled by agreement of the secondary reviewers and the Program Director.

The applicants invited to interview will be notified using the ERAS email system by mid-November 2008, and receive instructions for the interview process. The interviews will be conducted in early January 2009. Alternates are called if the interview slots are not filled. Interviews are conducted by the dermatology faculty. Interviewees are judged on the basis of communication skills, ability to function as part of a team, response to ethical issues, personal qualities, and breadth of interests. Special consideration is given to well-qualified, under-represented minority candidates. A final rank list is produced by all interviewing faculty and submitted to the NRMP.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to arrive the day before their scheduled interview in order to spend time with our residents. Residents will host dinner at a family-style restaurant, provide a candid view of the program, and answer questions.

Eligibility:

Citizenship information for research training - Applicants expecting to compete for research training positions during their residency must be U.S. citizens or hold permanent resident status to be eligible for funding through National Health Services Research Award.
