We have instituted a mini-clinical encounter evaluation form. The learner is observed during an entire clinical encounter. A nine-point form is checked off by the attending with grades of unsatisfactory, satisfactory, or excellent. Clearly detailed criteria are defined. At the end of the encounter, the attending reviews the form with the learner and each evaluates the value of the feedback.
Residents maintain a portfolio of their residency experience to use as a tool for self evaluation.
Evaluations are completed by faculty and students after each rotation and reviewed with the resident each year (during January in a meeting with the Division Head and in June during a meeting with the Program Director). The American Board of Dermatology (ABD) Evaluation form is completed for each resident at the end of each year and submitted to the ABD by the Program Director.
