Dr. Philip Kirby Retirement
We are very grateful for Dr. Kirby’s many contributions to Dermatology over the past 30+ years. We wish him well in his retirement and want him to know he is so very appreciated!
We will miss you Obi-Wan! Don't be a stranger!

Obi-Wan Kenobi, was a legendary Jedi Master who played a significant role in the fate of the galaxy during the waning days of the Galactic Republic. He was the mentor of Anakin and Luke Skywalker, training both in the ways of the Force. He had a long and tumultuous career that helped shape the fate of the entire galaxy.
Dr. Philip Kirby (aka Obi-Wan), was a legendary Derm Master who played a significant role in the fate of the Dermatology division during the glorious days of the Galactic Republic of Dermatology. He was a mentor of residents and medical students (and fellow faculty), training in the ways of the Force and the ways of the Skin. He had a long and successful career that helped shape the fate of the entire division. He will be missed upon his retirement.

Each year we have a guest speaker present for our annual Pommerening lecture. Dr. Tsao spoke to the faculty this year with updates on melanoma therapeutics.

2012 Annual Retreat
The UW Division of Dermatology holds a retreat each year for faculty to come together and work on division-wide initiatives. Each year the Faculty compete against the Residents in a friendly bout of volleyball.

Congratulations to our three graduating trainees!

Jonathan Olson MD, Erin Moore MD, Shayla Francis MD 2012
After seven years of medical training at the University of Washington, Erin Moore MD has joined the physicians at Polyclinic, remaining in Seattle with her husband and twins.
Jonathan Olson MD remains at the University of Washington for his eighth year, accepting a Procedural Dermatology Fellowship with Drs. Dan Berg and Linda Chang.
Shayla O. Francis MD completed the one-year Procedural Dermatology Fellowship and moved to Dallas, TX joining the Skin Care Consultants practice.

2012 Odland Lecture
The UW Division of Dermatology hosted Dr. Richard Gallo, MD, PhD as the 2012 George F. Odland
Lecturer on May 18, 2012. His presentation titled “Innate Immunity for Dermatologists” was a primer on the newest research findings in skin immunology.

Dr. Olerud’s remarks included a tribute to Dr. Marvin Young as his mentor and longtime friend.
Judy Young and her granddaughters accepted the Baker Award in honor of Dr. Young’s volunteer clinical activities, most recently in the VA telederm project.

Annual Teaching Awards
The Dermatology Residents awarded the 2012
John E. Olerud Resident Teaching Award to
Dr. Kyle Garton for his inspiring and dedicated
teaching. Dr. Garton completed his dermatology
residency at the University of Washington in
2008, followed by a dermatopathology
fellowship at Geisinger.
Dr. Kim Abson was selected to receive the Clinical Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award for her commitment to resident teaching in didactics and as an inpatient attending at the UW Medical Center.
