  The 2008 Design Entrance Workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 17th from 8:00am to 5:00pm. This workshop takes place once a year and there are no makeup dates. All students taking the Design Entrance Workshop should come to Mary Gates Hall Room 389 at 8:00am. Snacks will be provided throughout the day. There will be a break for lunch.

There is a $15 fee for supplies and expenses related to the exam. You may bring a check (payable to University of Washington) or cash to the Advising office (open Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm). You may also pay at the exam. No credit cards will be accepted.

To be eligible for the workshop, you must be a current UW student, or an eligible transfer student who has already applied for UW admission in Autumn 2008.

If you have taken ART 166 and received a grade of 2.8-3.6, we strongly encourage you to take the Design Entrance Workshop. Students who receive a 3.7 or higher in ART 166 are automatically accepted in the Design program.

All participants must register for the Workshop by Thursday, May 29, 2008. Please use the online registration form here to sign up for the Workshop.

Please bring the following items to the Workshop:
1. Five to Ten Samples of Design Work
Please show each sample on a 8.5 x 11" or 9 x 12" page.

Note: Art 166 projects can be submittted in their original format. If you revise any projects after the course has ended (after receiving your final grade), please submit originals as well as the revised work. Please clearly label the new projects "Revised".

All samples should support your application to the Design major. These may include photography, drawing, design projects and/or other studio coursework. Portfolios will be available for student pick-up outside of room 247 of the Art Building on Monday, June 30. All unclaimed portfolios will be discarded after Friday, July 11.

2. Letter of Intention
This personal statement should address your background and reasons for interest in the Visual Communication Design, Industrial Design or Design Studies major. We are especially interested in how you see the UW design program relative to other programs and your interests/career goals. Please limit this statement to one 8.5 x 11" page.

3. Personal Resume
Please include the following information:
Name and contact information
High school name/location and GPA
Current UW-GPA and total credits earned
Previous College GPA and total credits earned
TOEFL Score (if applicable)
Extracurricular Activities
Volunteer and/or Paid Work Experience
Photograph

4. All College Transcripts
Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

5. Drawing and Layout Tools
Students should bring the following supplies to the Workshop:
Pencils (any leads)
Ruler (at least 12")
Scissors
Eraser
Black markers
Colored drawing pencils or colored markers (any set of colors)

Student may bring additional drawing/design tools if they wish. For example:
French curves
Ellipse templates
Triangles
X-acto knife + cutting mat
(NOTE: knife use will be permitted only with cutting mat.)

All other materials will be provided at the Workshop.


What to expect from the Workshop
Design faculty will present an overview/orientation to all design majors. Following the orientation, students will be divided into smaller groups to complete a series of short design problems. There will be a breaks for lunch (on your own) as well as snack breaks (snacks provided). During the problem sessions, faculty will be available to answer questions and provide guidance.


After the Workshop

Students will be notified by mail of their status by Friday, June 26, 2008. Accepted students should contact the Art Advising Office by Monday, July 14, 2008 to register for the Fall 2008 sophomore design classes.
