| The majority of courses in the Division of Design are taught by six full-time faculty. However, the Division does occasionally bring in guest instructors. These adjunct faculty are experienced professionals who provide specific expertise to the classroom environment.
Sean Bolan
Sean Bolan received his Master's degree in Visual Communication Design and his Master's degree in Education from the University of Washington. He previously served as the head of the graphic design program at Cornish College of the Arts and practiced professionally for over 10 years with major design studios in Holland, England, Spain, and the United States.
Brian Boram
Brian Boram is a founding partner of RMB Vivid, Inc., a design studio that focuses on conceptualizing and managing comprehensive communication systems. His work has been recognized by the American Center for Design, AIGA, Communication Arts, Print, The Seattle Show and ID Magazine.
Kelly Brandon
Kelly C. Brandon, AIA, SEGD, is an architect and graphic designer with 30 years of experience in architectural, graphic and exhibit design projects, involving design, management, marketing and team direction responsibilities. He has won many design awards for his work in graphic design, has taught, lectured, and traveled extensively.
John Close
John Closer is Creative Director of Push Design, Seattle. Before founding Push Design, John served as one of the creative directors at Leonhardt:Fitch, managing a team of designers, helping provide vision for the firm's overall creative, and serving as a creative lead on various projects. His experience ranges across a wide spectrum of applications, including identity/branding systems, information design, annual reports, digital media, packaging and exhibit/retail graphics. Andrew Davidson
Andrew Davidson is a software designer, producer, technologist, and educator specializing in the creation of interactive applications, with over 25 years of experience in the professional and academic worlds. He currently oversees production for a pediatrics research group at the University of Washington's School of Medicine in Seattle. Davidson's professional career has focused on the creation of entertainment and educational software products, including feature film special effects (The Last Starfighter, 1984) and interactive music projects with artists Todd Rundgren and Peter Gabriel. He has held faculty and administrative appointments at Art Center College of Design, and the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, in Ivrea, Italy.
David Edquist
David Edquist is a partner at EDX Design, a Seattle studio specializing in graphic design, exhibit and environmental work. Prior to establishing EDX, David worked with some of America's largest graphic design organizations creating identity and marketing communications materials for national and international clients, including the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
Bill Flora
Bill Flora is currently Design Director for the Microsoft Windows Media Division. Bill started as a designer for Microsoft in 1992 after attaining degrees in Business Marketing from the University of Coloradoat Boulder and Graphics and Packaging from Art Center College of Design. After Art Center Bill had had the opportunity to lead the design for Encarta Encyclopedia, MSN, and currently, Windows Media Center.
Karen Gutowsky-Zimmerman
Karen Gutowsky-Zimmerman is a Principal at Z Group Design, a Seattle design firm specializing in corporate branding and print, environmental and digital communications. She has managed and completed design projects for a wide variety of national and regional corporations, including AT&T Wireless, Microsoft Corporation, Alaska Airlines and Children's Hospital.
Natalia Ilyin
Natalia Ilyin's interests in contemporary mythic imagery and semiotics have led her to teach at The Cooper Union, Yale University, and Rhode Island School of Design. She lectures widely on the history and effects of cultural imagery. Natalia's second book, Chasing the Perfect, was published by Metropolis Press in 2004. Her first book, Blonde Like Me: The Roots of the Blonde Myth in Our Culture, was published by Simon and Schuster in 2000.
George McCain
George McCain, FIDSA, principal at McCain Design and a graduate of the Industrial Design program at the UW, recently retired after 38 years at Fluke Corporation where his career culminated as Corporate Design Manager and included three years at Fluke Nederland in Holland. George has numerous Design Patents and his work has been recognized with awards from IDSA/BusinessWeek, iF Hannover, and the JIDPO Good Design Award, among others, and was included in the Smithsonian Museum’s inaugural National Design Triennial at the Cooper Hewitt. He has been involved in the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) at both the local and national level, as District Vice-President, a member of the Board of Directors, and President of the Design Foundation and was recently elected a Fellow by IDSA.
Linda Norlen
Linda Norlen is a design consultant, educator, and writer. For 15 years in Los Angeles she ran a design studio that specialized in print, exhibit, and environmental design projects. She taught in the Visual Communication program at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, California, and later in the Graphic Design department at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where she became the Associate Chair. More recently she spent three years in Italy and collaborated with Interaction Design Institute Ivrea on a number of projects, ranging from organizing workshops on ideation and innovation, to writing design case studies and editing students' and faculty's presentations of their work. She is currently working on a nonfiction book.
Anne Traver
Affiliate Assistant Professor Anne Traver is a Principal at Methodologie, a design firm in Seattle specializing in brand solutions, identity, websites, marketing and investor communication materials. Anne oversees the creative work of the graphic and interactive design teams at Methodologie. Respected as one of the country's leading graphic designers and a talented entrepreneur, Anne has impeccable design standards honed over two decades and demonstrated in dozens of award-winning projects for the Northwest region's most prestigious companies.
Ray Ueno
Ray Ueno was until recently the Chief Creative Officer at Fitch, a design firm located in downtown Seattle. Ray's experience cuts across a wide spectrum, from branding/identity systems to naming, annual reports, packaging, digital movies, and websites. He has been recognized in virtually every top design awards publication including Communication Arts, Black Book AR 100, Graphis, How, and Print.
Ken Widmeyer
Ken Widmeyer is principal of Widmeyer Design, a Seattle design firm specializing in branded environments. His firm's work includes permanent interpretive exhibits for the UW Husky Hall of Fame and the Lighting Design Lab for Seattle City Light. Ken's work has been recognized by AIGA, Print, American Corporate Identity, The Seattle Show, and appeared in numerous national and international design publications. |
