Bariatric surgery tied to better health outcomes in diabetes, study finds

Researchers found that bariatric surgery among type 2 diabetes patients with class I and II
obesity led to an 89% diabetes remission rate and reductions in A1C from 7.1%
at baseline to 5.8%, number of diabetes medications from baseline 0.7 agents to
0.2 agents and fasting blood glucose from baseline 94.6 mg/dL to 129.4 mg/dL.
The findings, presented at ObesityWeek and based on 35 diabetes patients,
revealed that bariatric surgery also resulted in mean body mass index
reductions of 7 kg/m2 and median excess weight loss of 55% after an average of
five years.
