Study looks at benefits of community health worker-led intervention in diabetes

Researchers found that Latino adults with type 2 diabetes experienced greater reductions in HbA1C and diabetes distress six months after participating in a community health worker-led diabetes self-management education program, compared with those in the enhanced usual care group. The findings in Diabetes Care, based on 222 patients with diabetes and poor glycemic control, revealed that CHW participants who also received weekly group sessions delivered by peer leaders after the program maintained their HbA1C improvements at 12 and 18 months and had significantly fewer depressive symptoms at 18 months than the enhanced usual care group.
