| “We will become
an academic community that mirrors the varied faces of our society.
The challenges of our time require the energy and ideas of all our
people. We cannot afford to leave out the creativity and innovations
of any segment of society. But beyond this practical argument, equality
of opportunity is a matter of simple justice. It’s the right
thing to do, and this University will do it.”

Welcome to the Diversity Appraisal Website. This website contains
reports submitted by nearly 150 units from across three campuses
of the University of Washington describing their diversity efforts
in seven areas of concern: student access and opportunities; student
development and retention; engagement with the external community;
staff and administrative diversity; faculty diversity; curriculum
and research; and climate.
You will also find a description of the context and process the
University used to generate this comprehensive look at diversity
initiatives and practices. The Diversity Appraisal Report, prepared
by the Diversity Appraisal Steering Committee, synthesizes the unit
reports and provides a sampling of good practices, analysis of challenges
and recommendations for change.
Diversity is defined as: “race, gender, disability, class,
sexual identity/orientation, religion, age, ethnicity, culture,
region/geography, and indigenous status.”
