From ellendo@u.washington.edu Wed Aug 15 14:42:21 2001 Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2001 16:54:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Yi-Luen Do To: Grant Gustafson Cc: 'Laurel Wilson' , Mark Johnson , mura5385@drizzle.com, reenakawal@hotmail.com, Bonnie Duncan , Susan Jones , gmb@seanet.com, KUBergmann@WCArchitects.com Subject: RE: more thoughts on SAM/Benaroya Hi all, Here is the latest scoop, Here is the deal I have just negotiated (as I have hoped, planned and promised in the various emails sent to you guys earlier, if you read them ..). after i talked to the college associte dean/lecture series, my colleagues at Design Machine Group, etc is as follows: 1. UW (college + DMG) will pick up the tap, total of $3000 to Greg Lynn, provided that: * all PR material from space.city will clearly marked UW & space.city co-sponsoring the event * the postcard/poster/annoucement from space.city will include the space.city sponsored DMG demo event, being featured under the same unbrella of 'Digital Design' or 'Design Technology' or 'Design Computing' (as a series) - win-win for UW and Space.city * UW's Dean, or a couple faculty (associated dean, or DMG director) will be invited to do short introduction before the talk * Greg will spend an hour or so at UW campus, either quick walk-through or seeing student work, or whatever (no workshop, Greg was specific that he will only do a lecture) * that there will be 7-8 seats reserved (for free) for UW people to join the dinner (if this is not possible, UW will only chip in 2,500 and reserve $500 to pay for dinner, therefore, space.city will need to chip in $500 to make the $3000 all inclusive to Greg * all UW students should get in for free (as for faculty, whatever space.city thinks is reasonable) * space.city will deal with the site arrangements, rental, ticket sales, annoucement, PR, etc. * UW likes the dates of Nov 6 Benaroya for Greg, and Nov 5 SAM (100 people lecture hall) for DMG event (if there is other betther alternative for both events, let's hear it) * UW will supply mailing list for space.city, to avoid duplicate effort of sending out annoucements (and email lists) 2. If Space.city like the above, we will put things down in writing and make it work. If space.city doesn't like the above, we will withdraw both Greg Lynn and DMG events from space.city and do it at UW campus. (does someone wants to draft this agreement with UW? and the agreement with Greg? is there any sample from past events?) 3. the sense from the faculty and students at UW is that Greg can easilly fill up the Benaroya Hall, if it's free, 150-200 students will just show up and bring their friends, plus other design professionals, or other design students, etc, full house at Benaroya is definetely doable. 4. UW has already got agreement (and $ allocated for it) from Rem Koolhaas that he will do a lecture at UW this fall. (and happy to learn/work with whoever in space.city that has contacts with Rem or the Library) 5. UW will be happy to co-sponsor Calatrava event next year, let's talk more in detail later. (possibly Lot/ek, or others as well) Spacers?! I am eagerly awaiting for your response and a 'go-ahead.' If space.city doesn't want it, UW will do the events. Let me know ASAP. Thanks, Ellen
