War on the Docks: Puget Sound’s Longshoremen in the 1934 Strike
With their efforts to recruit scab labor thwarted time and time again, employers became desperate.  In early July, police were called upon to protect scabs.  On July 5th, San Francisco police attempted to clear nearly 3,000 picketers from the docks.  When the strikers refused to give, the police opened up fire on the longshoreman.  In Seattle a similar event occurred.  The events of this day came to be known as “Bloody Thursday.”
