Curriculum and Hospitals

The four-year curriculum will provide the Universityof Washington Emergency Medicine residents with an outstanding clinical and didactic education preparing them to practice in any clinical environment, as well as provide the foundation for a successful academic career for those who choose that path.  The 4-year curriculum takes advantage of the world-class reputations and rich traditions of excellence in clinical medicine, education and research, and the abundant resources of the University of Washington (UWMC) and Harborview (HMC) Medical Centers, the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM), and the Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH), as well as a busy community hospital, Valley Medical Center (VMC) in nearby Renton.

R1 Year (13 blocks of 4 weeks)
Orientation (HMC and UWMC) – one block
Emergency Medicine (HMC) – two blocks
Emergency Medicine (UWMC) – one block
Pediatric Emergency Medicine (SCH) – one block
Anesthesiology (HMC) – one block
Cardiology/CCU (HMC) – one block
Inpatient trauma (HMC) – one block
Medicine ICU (UWMC) – one block
General Inpatient Medicine (HMC) – one block
Psychiatric Emergency Medicine (HMC) – two weeks
Inpatient Burns/Plastics(HMC) – one month
Ultrasonography – two weeks
EMS 1 Week

R2 Year (12 one-month blocks)

*In PGY-2 year, 4 shifts of every HMC ED block will be scheduled at the SCH Pediatric ED, while 5 shifts of every UWMC ED block will be scheduled at the SCH Pediatric ED.  This is equivalent to one month per year of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. 

**In PGY-3 and 4, 3 shifts of every HMC ED block will be scheduled at the SCH Pediatric ED, while 5 shifts of every UWMC ED block will be scheduled at the SCH Pediatric ED.  This is equivalent to one month per year of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

^^The University of Washington Medical Center provides three weeks of vacation for all residents in every specialty

The EM residency also includes an extensive EMS curriculum that is integrated throughout the 4 years.
