The University of Washington Medical Center

UWMCThe University of Washington Medical Center is one of the two primary teaching hospitals for the University of Washington. The UWMC is recognized for its outstanding patient care including physical and routine immunizations, treatment for illnesses and injuries, dental care, women's health care, specialty diagnostic services, and 24-hour emergency services. UWMC is a 450-bed comprehensive care facility with over 80 outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary specialty centers as well as nearly 400 attending staff and full-time physicians.

Specialized diagnostic and treatment programs at UWMC include the Bone and Joint Center, the Cancer Center, cardiology and cardiac surgery, the Fertility and Endocrine Center, high-risk maternity and newborn intensive care, the Multidisciplinary Pain Center and multi-organ transplantation service. The UWMC is also home to the Health Sciences Library and Information Center (HSLIC), which contains over 345,000 bound volumes and 4,000 current serials. The library serves as the Pacific Northwest headquarters for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and is the University of Washington's primary resource for information in the biomedical sciences, including the fields of biomedicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, public health, as well as social work and allied disciplines. The Emergency Medicine Service at UWMC is a level 3 trauma center and serves over 27,000 patients.  Patients presenting reflect the influence of the university and the surrounding area, with 32 percent of the patients falling between the ages of 20-29. The average patient age is 39.5 years.


Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center

Children's HospitalResidents spend at least one month at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, which serves both as a community hospital for greater Seattle and as a pediatric referral center for the Northwest. Children's is the only regional pediatric health care center devoted primarily to the surgical and developmental needs of children in the area of Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. CHRMC has 208 patient beds and provides a variety of inpatient, outpatient and emergency care services including more than 50 outpatient clinics, 24-hour emergency care, Infant and Pediatric Intensive Care, Psychiatric Care, Rehabilitation and Transitional Care, as well as Hematology/ Oncology.

At the core of Children's specialized care are 180 hospital-based physicians and a medical staff of about 1,200 community physicians who refer and care for CHCS patients.


Harborview Medical CenterHarborview Medical Center

The Harborview Medical Center (HMC) is the other primary teaching hospital for the University of Washington. Harborview is a 411-bed comprehensive care facility with a variety of services including an Emergency/Trauma Center, a burn center, neurological surgery, Airlift Northwest, Medic 1, a sexual assault center, the Regional Epilepsy Center, an occupational medicine program, mental health services, and rehabilitation medicine.

The Emergency/Trauma Center is the only Level 1 trauma center in Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. Annually the Emergency/Trauma Center serves more than 67,000 patients. Nearly 70 percent of the 12,000 patients hospitalized at Harborview in 1995 were admitted through the Emergency/Trauma Center. The Burn Center is one of the largest in the United States with more than 450 patients admitted annually.

The Harborview Medic 1 was one of the first Medic 1 programs and is responsible for training paramedics throughout the state. Airlift Northwest transports patients from all over the Northwest to Harborview, University of Washington Medical Center, Children's Hospital and Medical Center, and the Providence Medical Center.


Madigan Army Medical Center

Madigan Army Medical CenterDuring their training, residents rotate primarily through the Madigan Army Medical Center. Madigan is a 414-bed military hospital serving active duty military, their families and retirees living in the Puget Sound area. The Madigan Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the state of Washington, providing care for over 60,000 patients annually. The combined emergency room and "Fast Track" acute care clinic provides care for over 120,000 patients per year.

The MAMC Emergency Department also provides care for non-military patients that are brought into the emergency room with acute illness or injury. Additionally, MAMC is a Tertiary Care Medical Center and serves as a referral center for the Northwest region of the country. The Emergency Department is also a regional EMS base station and EMS training is incorporated into the training of the residents.
