The
City of Mount Vernon
is a medium-sized city located in northwest Washington in Skagit
County. The Mount Vernon Healthy Communities Project commenced
in early 2004.
The City of Mount Vernon city council adopted the Mount
Vernon Healthy Communities Nutrition and Physical Activity Action
Plan as part of the city's long-term comprehensive plan. The action
plan, developed from community feedback and local data, consists
of three priority recommendations:
Access to health promoting foods
Ensure schools provide healthful foods and beverages
Increase the number of healthy community
environments
Utilize urban planning approaches - zoning and land use - that
promote physical activity
Increase
the number of physical activity opportunities available to children
Encourage policies that provide children with opportunities for
physical activity outside of formal physical education classes
The
city is partnering with Skagit County Public Health Department, the University
of Washington, and the WA State Department of Health.
