The City of Mount Vernon has been working with a community advisory
group to develop an action plan that focuses on environmental and
policy change. The plan was developed with information gathered from
data and community feedback. This was done through a series of focus
groups of adults and parents of young children who shared their perceptions
of what changes would support their ability to choose healthy foods
and be more physically active. community audit, conducted by community
volunteers, assessed the nutrition and physical activity policy environment
of Mount Vernon. The action plan focuses on three goals: 1) utilize
urban planning approaches that promote physical activity; 2) encourage
policies that provide K-12 students with opportunities for physical
activity outside of formal physical education classes; and 3) ensure
schools K-12 provide healthy foods and beverages. The draft plan was
presented to the larger community for feedback during a public event
in June 2004. The city is partnering with Skagit County Health Department,
the University of Washington, and the WA State Department of Health.
