Healthy School Pilot - Lincoln Elementary

Community Forums | Environmental Audit | Healthy Schools Action Plan

Lincoln Elementary, located in a diverse community in the center of Mount Vernon, is the first of several Mount Vernon schools to mobilize the school community to increase physical activity and healthy nutrition options for students. Parents, school administrators, and teachers are working with the Mount Vernon Healthy Communities Project and Leadership Skagit to develop an action plan to improve school nutrition and physical activity.

Community Forums

In February 2005, the Healthy School Planning Team kicked off the Lincoln Elementary School Healthy School Pilot with a Community Forum. School families and community members were invited to learn about the concern of inactivity, access to healthy foods and obesity for children, while their children participated in a Kids Activity Night.

Environmental Audit

Groups of parents and staff have conducted an environmental audit of the opportunities and barriers to healthy foods and physical activity at Lincoln. With this information and input from the school community, three priority recommendations will be selected and merged into an action plan for change. Each step of the project is being evaluated to enable other schools to conduct similar projects.

Healthy Schools Action Plan

Following an intensive six month planning process the Lincoln Elementary Healthy School Team adopted their project Action Plan. The team selected three priorities:

  1. Increase the number of physical activity opportunities available for children.
  2. Increase access to health-promoting foods.
  3. Promote healthy food choices and physical activity.
