Do I qualify for the study?

You qualify if you have the following:

• Fatty liver diagnosed by your doctor
• Age 18-80
• Able to take daily medication and come to Seattle for all study visits and procedures (12 days total)

You do not qualify if you have any of the following:

• Cirrhosis of the liver
• Diabetes on medications
• Drink more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day
• Hepatitis B or C
• Significant weight loss in the past 6 months (>5%)
• Serious medical conditions such as:
  • heart disease or history of congestive heart failure
  • abnormal kidney function
  • anemia
  • gallstones
  • cancer
  • retinopathy
  • other serious medical illness
• Currently pregnant or breastfeeding or planning pregnancy
• Any of the following medications:
  • medications to treat diabetes
  • gemfibrozil, fenofibrate, niacin
  • anti-HIV medications
  • atypical antipsychotics (such as zyprexa or quetiapine)
  • sertraline
  • coumadin
  • nitrates
  • estrogen, tamoxifen
  • steroids such as prednisone
  • amiodarone
  • accutane
  • ursodeoxycholic acid, betaine, milk thistle.
