Effects of Iron Overload (Hemochromatosis) on Glucose Metabolism: Do I qualify for the study?

You qualify if you have the following:

• Iron overload (ferritin >200) due to HFE gene mutations (H63D or C56Y)
• No phlebotomy within the past year
• Age 18-80

You do not qualify if you have any of the following:

• Phlebotomy within the past year
• Severe liver disease
• Other causes of liver dysfunction (hepatitis B or C, autoimmune hepatitis)
• Diabetes requiring medications
• Drugs that cause insulin resistance (niacin, steroids)
• Pregnancy
• Anemia (Hematocrit <33%)
• Problems with kidney function (Creatinine >1.5 mg/dl)
• Other serious medical illness
