Effects of Iron Overload (Hemochromatosis) on Glucose Metabolism: Do I qualify for the study?
You qualify if you have the following:
- Iron overload (ferritin >200) due to HFE gene mutations (H63D or C56Y)
- No phlebotomy within the past year
- Age 18-80
You do not qualify if you have any of the following:
- Phlebotomy within the past year
- Severe liver disease
- Other causes of liver dysfunction (hepatitis B or C, autoimmune hepatitis)
- Diabetes requiring medications
- Drugs that cause insulin resistance (niacin, steroids)
- Pregnancy
- Anemia (Hematocrit <33%)
- Problems with kidney function (Creatinine >1.5 mg/dl)
- Other serious medical illness
