Study Name: Effect of Anti-oxidants on Beta-cell Function in Humans: Do I qualify for the study?

You qualify if you are:

  • Between 18-75 years old
  • Have diabetes treated only with diet and exercise, or diet, exercise plus metformin
  • If taking metformin, you must be on a stable dose of metformin for at least 3 months
  • Subjects must be willing to maintain prior exercise and dietary habits, take daily medication, and come to Seattle for study visits and procedures (3 days total)

You do not qualify if you have any of the following:

  • Have a hemoglobin A1c >9% (a test to determine diabetes control)
  • Smoke or use tobacco
  • Take diabetes medications (such as insulin, glyburide, pioglitazone, exenetide, etc.) other than metformin
  • Take medications associated with insulin resistance: prednisone, glucocorticoids, niacin
  • Use anti-inflammatory medications on a daily basis (such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin)
  • Are anemic (have a low blood count)
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have other serious medical conditions such as cancer, inflammatory arthritis, heart, liver or kidney disease
  • Have heartburn requiring medication, stomach ulcers, digestive or swallowing problems
