Study Details: Effect of Anti-oxidants on Beta-cell Function in Humans
What does the study involve?
- Screening visit to see if you are eligible for the study
- Oral glucose tolerance test to measure insulin resistance – this test involves drinking a glucose drink and drawing blood samples from an IV for two hours. This test will be performed three times: on Days 0, 14, and 28.
- 4 weeks medication: After the initial study procedures, you will be asked to take NAC (600 mg capsules) by mouth twice a day for a total of 4 weeks. During the first 2 weeks (Days 0-14), you will take one capsule twice a day; during the second 2 weeks (Days 14-28), you will take two capsules twice a day.
Who is eligible?
- If you have diet controlled diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes) and do not take insulin or glucose-lowering agents other than metformin you may be eligible.
