Each year the EARC offers a study tour to East Asia for educators who completed all the requirements of a National Consortium for Teaching about Asia 30-hour seminar in the Pacific Northwest. Designed to build on the knowledge gained in National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA), the study tours provide both first-hand experience and increased knowledge and understanding of Asia. Destinations alternate between years. Previous NCTA study tours have traveled to China, Japan, and/or Korea. 2007 Study Tour NCTA in
China Leaving the U.S. in late June, NCTA in China will provide an intense exploration of Chinese history, geography, and culture. Leading the tour are specialists in China studies who will guide participants’ experience of four areas of China, aided by local and national Chinese guides. Participants will spend most of their time exploring as a group, but will also engage in lecture–discussion sessions with leaders and enjoy free time to pursue individual interests. The goal of NCTA in China is to create a learning community in which individual teachers’ interests and strengths benefit the group’s experience in China and upon return to the classroom. After the study tour, participants will be asked to write reflections on key experiences as well as an implementation plan to share at a fall follow-up meeting. A grant from the
Freeman Foundation in support of NCTA covers most of the expenses of
participants in this study tour. Applications are due on February
12, 2007. NCTA alumni who completed all seminar requirements,
can demonstrate how study-tour content will be used in their K–12
teaching, and who will continue to hold a permanent teaching
assignment in 2007–08 are eligible to apply. Alumni of the China
Teacher Leadership Project study tours and previous NCTA in China
study tours are not eligible for this opportunity. To request an electronic or hard copy of an application, please call the EARC at (206) 543-1921, or e-mail earc@u.washington.edu with a complete mailing address or preferred email address. Please indicate that you are requesting the "NCTA in China" study tour application and indicate which format you prefer to receive it in.
